Is animation gif possible as wallpaper

I created a rather smart wallpaper which has animated text on it

Is it possible to have this as my wallpaper. Have tried to save it as desktop background but the animated text doesn't appear :(

I found an instruction for earlier versions of Ubuntu with the forum search , but it is four years old and no longer applicable . It may be possible but I find nothing recent.
