i have an asus netbook with unbuntu 11.10 on the small 3gb internal drive. i also have ubuntu 12.04 on a 32gb sd card on the netbook.

I am trying to erase both the older ubuntu os on the netbook and clean install a fresh copy of ubuntu 12.04 on the 32 gb sd card.

how do i erase both the drives and do a clean install via ubuntu install cd?

I think you can do that from the Ubiquity installer. You can also install Ubuntu from a USB flash drive using UNetbootin.

i tried to erase both drives via live ubuntu cd installer but ubuntu 11.10 is still there after the install and previous settings of the ubuntu 12.04 is retained after the install. i clicked delete on both of the drives during the installation under do something else. it seems so hard just to erase an older ubuntu copy.

You could try with GParted Live (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php/) or UBCD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/).
