I am using an older "narrow screen" ThinkPad T40p. I am using the SXGA+ (1400x1050) video standard.

I am using Ubuntu version 11.04 with Gnome desktop version 2.32.1.

I don't like the side bar in the current version of Ubuntu. It doesn't look good with these narrow screen formats.

Is it possible to use a previous version of the Gnome desktop that doesn't use the sidebar with 12.04? If so, can someone please tell me how to revert to it?

Quote from above website:

"gnome-fallback isn't exactly like the classic Gnome of 11.04 or earlier versions of Ubuntu"

I'd like the Gnome of 11.04 or earlier versions of Ubuntu. Can someone help?

Can you use Gnome 2 with Ubuntu version 12.04?

Has anyone come up with a way to add a "System" option to the taskbar and get the programs you normally get with it?

Hi!, unckybob,

The Preferences & Administration menu entries, that used to be under 'System', with Gnome2, are now available under Applications>System Tools, with Gnome Classic (no effects).

In 12.04, Main Menu is not included by default, but can be installed from Ubuntu Software Center, or "apt-get install alacarte"; and you can then edit all the menus as before.

You Posted:
Can you use Gnome 2 with Ubuntu version 12.04? You can also get the same menus with Ubuntu Unity by installing 'ClassicMenu Indicator'; It is not EXACTLY the same as Gnome2, but similar, and uses an Icon instead of a menu title in the top bar/panel.

Chao!, bogan.
