This morning I found my 10 yr old has been um, exploring online. His mom gave him a Windows XP laptop, but didn't set up any parental controls. I dug around in Control Panel and didn't see anything obvious.

Being a linux user, I remembered there was a form of ubuntu set up for students, Edubuntu. Does it offer automatic parental controls and web filtering? Or are there easy apps to install that I can add after the install? From a brief search it looks like Nanny is not currently working on the most recent distros.

Is Edubuntu well supported? Or would a regular Ubuntu install accomplish the same thing?

You'd probably have more luck asking in the correct subforum: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=331. Anyway, although I've never used it, I highly doubt Edubuntu has that kind of thing built in, so you'd have to install a third-party package, which would obviously work on the more popular Ubuntu variants, and if I were you I'd go for one of those instead just because it's probably easier to find support if you run into any problems.

Thanks. I'll post there...
