I've been using GIMP for 2 years but still have not learned a few things or at least how they work.

I read through this helpful page:
http://vendiadev.wordpress.com/2010/11/30/hello-world/

However I still am having difficulty with making layers ( behind a subject or object) , how to do transparencies and make fog in front of subjects.

I do have the GIMP Bible on my computer but that's been pretty painstaking with hours of reading and not producing-

Is there a tutorial you know of that goes into depth?
Can you make a suggestion?

I think the best place to ask this is gimp forum, since there hang people who constantly uses Gimp, and you will get the best advice.
