How do Big Name Companies such as Google, Facebook, etc. get their domain names? I am very certain they do not go up to domain.com (or other of these kinds of registrars) to get their domain name. Do they somehow host it themselves, or is there a super-secret league of evil internet master-minds that magically add themselves to every DNS server in the entire interwebz, including the little dinky atom box in your attic? (ok lol the latter is untrue). I'm just a curious cat that wants to know the magic behind everything.

They probably buy the names direct from the top level domain registry and get it to point to their dns servers. I doubt they would want too many middle men having admin access to their domain. I could be wrong though.

As far as I know big companies register domains the same as everyone else. See this page (http://www.out-law.com/page-4049) for an example of when Microsoft forgot to re-register hotmail.co.uk.

The process is no different from eveyone else. They go to a domain registrar who then obtains the domains from the respective registries. What is different is that certain domain registrars have specialized on this clientele by offering domain registration as part of a very comprehensive package of brand protection involving monitoring, registering domains accross multiple registries, ensuring registrations are up to date, etc. A popular provider in this market is https://www.markmonitor.com/.

To find out who is the registrar for a particular domain big or small say: example.com. Start a terminal and enter at the prompt:

whois example.com

No different than anyone else, but some use their own servers.

The registrar for microsoft.com is MARKMONITOR INC., apparently:
http://whois.net/whois/microsoft.com

Same for Google:
http://whois.net/whois/google.com

Same for Apple:
http://whois.net/whois/apple.com

Here's their website:
