(and newborn to linux)

I miss one thing about Unity: the ease with which i could access my "favorites", by a sideways slam of the cursor to the left!

Two questions:

1. Now i need to enter via "Activities", right?
2. My favourites is now over-full and unweildy: how can I tame it so as to make it more functional

You can push the cursor to the top left and start typing the application name much like Unity . For searching all applications you have to go to applications if you don't know the name.

I have not run out of space in favorites yet , but I know some people have written about adding a dock. I can't comment on if or how that would work , but there are docks in the software center. I imagine removing duplicate entries on the dock would eliminate any conflicts but don't know for sure.
