i tried to install firestarter and can't get it to recognize my ethernet connection;
get following error message when i clik "start"

Failed to start Firestarter
Device Eth0 Not Ready
Plse check your network settings and make sure your internet connection is active

which it is: i'm with Optus (Australia) using a Hwawei USB mobile broadband device

Device eth0 is your ethernet connection, which is why you get the not ready message when connected with a mobile broadband USB device. There may be a way of getting firestarter to recognise the Huawei, but I suggest you uninstall firestarter before you get to the configuration stage. It is unmaintained (last time I checked) and buggy.

You might want to read some things in the Security Discussions forum (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=338) before deciding what to do abut firewall configuration. Start with these two stickies:

Thanks kindly. Followed this advice and reflected that one must really consider well before jumping in boots an' all.

Waste of time with firestarter, based on a youtube vid which i saw and acted on without taking notes and making comparisons.
