VLC handles pretty much anything you throw at it. If you haven't installed libdvdcss2, see here - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats#head-38508785e53c611dde1859232189b2e823135eb9

I would have to say vlc and make sure you have installed all the codecs... You can do that with Automatix.

It's a matter of choice really, Mplayer and VLC are both fine.

I use Xine-ui as well.

Anyway... it doesn't really matter what player you use.... none of them will work on a commercial dvd without libdvdcss2.

I went to VideoLan to get the latest version.

http://developers.videolan.org/libdvdcss/

Click link that says "releases"
Click 1.2.9 (Or whatever is the latest version)
Click deb/
Click libdvdcss2_1.2.9-1_i386.deb (Or whatever the latest version is)
After it downloads, open your file manager and double click it. The package manager of Ubuntu or Kubuntu should come up for intalling it (I think).... in Xubuntu you right click and open with GDebi.
