12.04 alternative cli install + xorg + openbox

I'm looking to get some sound going. I'm hoping to have the sound set up like my wifi with Wicd where i just did sudo apt-get install wicd then ran wicd-client -n to configure. I have no panels, bars, etc... I have no need. I just would like to install something for sound, and be able to run a gui that I can edit my input/output prefrences. I am new to linux, so sorry if this question is stupid. I'm looking for the meathod with the smallest footprint.

Plz&Thx:popcorn:

Not installed, are you saying that if i insall alsa-utils then my sound will work, and I can confiigure through a gui by running alsamixer? Assuming my sound card is supported, which it is.

It's not a definite yes that it will give you sound, but it's easier to adjust controls when you have some controls to adjust.

That is alsamixer.
Open a terminal and enter

alsamixer

IF message shows not installed run

sudo apt-get install alsamixer

and run first command to open.
