Serious Display Problem with EVERY Ubuntu distribution, except 10.04

I have attempted to upgrade from my perfectly fine and working copy of 10.04 Lucid, but when I attempt to upgrade to the new LTS version, 12.04, my screen is black. I hear that little jingle that comes with the login screen, but the screen is pitch black. I've plugged in an external monitor and it shows there, but carrying a monitor with me is not really what I'm up for, seeing as I'm on a laptop. Here's my specs and PC if that helps:


Gateway NV78
Graphics: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics controller, on a 1600x900 laptop screen
Processor: Intel i5 @ 2.66 (Dual Core)
RAM: 8GB

That's about all I know to offer.
