I installed Ubuntu 12.04 32bit on my laptop, everything is much as I would hope. However battery life is much lower than I would expect and the underside is very warm even when running on battery. When running Windows 7 the underside is cold when on battery and will last around 8 hours. Ubuntu is only lasting 4 hours or so.

Take a look at the jupiter program: https://theubuntudocumentary.wordpress.com/2012/07/07/install-cpu-performance-controlle-applet-jupiter-ubuntu-12-04/

Thanks, she's running much cooler now. I will have to wait to see if the battery life has been extended. However seeing the the CPU is running more slowly I can't see her chewing through the battery quite so quickly.

Thanks, Red, but it raises a question: is there a plan to integrate such critical functionality into Ubuntu as part of the default install?

You'll have to ask the Ubuntu maintainers. I believe that the functions implemented by the jupiter program are already available in Ubuntu but for the new linux users, it might be too difficult to set up.
