So, after some experimentation with my headphones, I finally figured out what is causing my speakers to work and my headphones to mute.
When I had alsamixer running, I noticed that it muted the speaker channel. When I unmuted it, suddenly I had sound in my headphones, and not on the speakers.
Ubuntu seems to be under the impression that my head phones channel (which has no volume bar) controls my headphones, but it does not. Is there anyway to change the behavior of Ubuntu so that it won't mute speaker when I plug in my headphones?
