I don't get it. It seems like at least once a week there is some ubuntu update that ubuntu says I need to reboot for. Are people just not updating their machines or is there a secret I don't know?

yeah. we don't change kernels. Just about the only thing that needs a reboot is a kernel upgrade or other change. There was a time when Dapper was still in testing that kernel upgrades were breaking other parts of my system, so I happily reverted to the last known "good" kernel until things were fixed (maybe a few weeks). The computer stayed up.
