I opened this thread earlier but someone closed the thread while I still needed some further information

I am now using 12.04 and the facility for login as root does not seem to be available as it was in older versions.

I was referered to a number of links which took some time to go through but did not give the information I was looking for

Yes I know the pitfalls of logging in as root but sometimes it is usefull tool

in the earlier versions after resetting the password I went to
system/administration/login window/security and
set allow system administrator
but this step is not available in 12.04
Either in Unity or Gnome

Then when you next switched accounts a login screen appeared where you entered root and the password. This does not happen now apparently by design.

Is there another way to do this?

It appears that you do want to login as root.

While it is possible to do so you'll not be getting help to do so here.

Please read the forums policy on logging in as root to the GUI.

You have already been pointed at the RootSudo tutorial.

There should be no reason for you to have to log in to the GUI as root.
