All the desktop environments for 12.04 run on top of Gnome 3.4, so you may want to identify which one . Thunderbird default in Unity. The Gnome Shell is setup to use evolution mail & calendar as default but it is not installed with the shell. You may have to change the default mail program under system settings > details > default applications. I don't have Evolution installed so I don't know if the option appears or will work if selected.

FYI, I use gmail (via web interface) and gnome-shell but could not find a good static new mail panel indicator so I created my own. See https://github.com/bulletmark/gmail-indicator. It uses push notifications and also integrates into Ubuntu's messaging menu when/if you run Unity etc.

I was wondering because there may be an extension option for the Gnome shell. If you have a working indicator I will consider the thread solved.

OK...I tried (and now im trying with mailnag) but is slow and i dont know why.
Anyway exits mail-notification (and isnt integrated with gnome3) that do the work (and i didnt try yet without evolution).
Moreover exits this extension for gnomw but only works with imap https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/244/biff/
or this extension https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/154/gmail-notify/ but only works with gmail....

So my conclution is ...by now gnome 3 doesnt have a nice/smooth/integrated/elegant/util! (for me) mail notifications....(by now....)

Part of the problem is Ubuntu doesn't use the Gnome Shell as a default desktop environment it is an optional add-on like my E17 . Evolution is also optional. Fedora , for example , uses the shell as default so I'm sure things are integrated better for that reason. I use Thunderbird mail , so notification hasn't been problem with Unity or the Gnome Shell.
