View Full Version : [ubuntu] USB Flash Drive Install ONLY wants to install not boot.

Hello all!
I have a confusing problem. I followed the instructions provided here http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ and almost succeeded.

The problem is that the USB Flashdrive boots but ONLY boots to the installer. The only options presented are to INSTALL Ubuntu,NOT to simply boot into Ubuntu as a usable desktop OS.I thought that after following the instructions I had to "install" Ubuntu on the Flash Drive but the installer only shows my hard disk, not the Flash Drive.

I thought I was installing Ubuntu 12.04-alternate-AMD64 to the Flashdrive to run off the drive itself, thinking it would do just that.

Have I done something incorrectly? Used the wrong method ? My goal was to create a USB drive with a usable Ubuntu installation on it NOT a USB installer.

Any help out there?

Thank you in advance for your patience and expertise!

Here is a How To for installing Lubuntu on a flash drive.

I would assume that installing Ubuntu would be very similar. I do believe that you will need a larger flash drive than the 4 Gb one described in this How To.

Thanks for the fast response Rex...will that method work for Ubuntu as well as Lbuntu ?

Your original problem was that you used the Ubuntu 12.04-alternate-AMD64 version which does not boot to a Live CD environment, but only to an installer. You should have used the desktop version, not the alternate.

I will check it out and if it works I'll come back and mark it SOLVED.

Thank you again.
