Odd behavior with laptop?

I have a laptop that, when I turn it on, the speakers make a quick popping/ticking sound and the screen is very dim and it slowly fades to black and then the machine turns off. Any ideas? Could it be due to overheating? Thanks!

Yes it is. I've tried it without the battery and it still occurs.
