Hi sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I'm still trying to get used to Linux/GNU terminology and not sure what I am looking for. I am testing out a bunch of different distros in VMware; testing different variations of DEs and DMs and I was wondering what the panel bars from Ubuntu 10.xx something were called and if I can still get them on other of the same types of distros? What I liked about them was that you could click the arrows on the left or right side and they would slide in and out from the screen and I want to be able to do that again. Was that part of Gnome or Unity maybe? I don't think it was Unity at that point though...

Yes, they are indeed called panels. Usually :)

As from Ubuntu 11.04, they are no more. You instead have the Unity Launcher.

There are many, many different distributions and even flavours of distributions; for example, Ubuntu has several flavours, some official (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Edubuntu) and some unofficial (Mint, Vinux, and more).

I am sure you'll find those sliding panels in one of the distributions, if not in the Ubuntu range.

Alternatively, you can set the panels (or the Unity Launcher, if you want Ubuntu) to automatically hide.

Thanx for the help, after installing a few more distros I found what I was looking for and it is indeed the Gnome panels that I was wanting. I did some deeper research on the net looking for this and came a across a lot of articles on Gnome, KDE and the subtle ware between Linus Torvalds and Gnome... some quite interesting stuff, I learned a lot.

Thanx again!!!

Which distro have you decided to install?

You can still use 'gnome-panel' in Ubuntu 12.04:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1966370

There I do even use the hide buttons w/o the arrows, but you can add the arrows if you wish ;)

Well at the moment I have Pear OS and CentOS in VM, but I have a Ubuntu 12.04 dual booted with Windows. Will mark as solved shortly. Thanx, guys..

CentOS is Redhat-based, which doesn't use Debian, and it looks good.

I had not heard of Pear OS before. I see that it is based on Ubuntu. There are so many distributions based on Ubuntu! I wonder if there is a list of them somewhere?

Pear OS is an actually good Mac clone. There quite a few Linux distro lists I found this googling but mostly I go to http://distrowatch.com/.

I found a good list of Ubuntu derivatives (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions#Ubuntu-based), both official and not, but it is not complete (for example, it omits Pear OS).

Nice though thanx. I tried installing Ubuntu 12.10 Alpha on VM abnd there is a major bug in Unity where when you auto-hide the "Unity Bar? Panel?" it will not come back out when you move the mouse to the edge. This is a verified bug on Launchpad as many people are having this problem. I think I'm gonna try some slackware now and come back to Ubuntu when there's a new interesting looking release, but I still have Ununtu 12.04 as a "stable" release, 2nd main OS.

The Launcher :)

Thanx.

I just checked out Macbuntu and I'm sort of impressed, although it came with Docky it didn't have a default compositor and so I installed xcompmgr and set the .desktop autostart for it and it works just fine now. This is an actually better Mac clone with the buttons and sliders etc... and it did have the Apple logo as a menu button, but after I updated it it went to Ubuntus logo, but no biggy everything else looked the same.
