Hi. I'm very new to Ubuntu (obviously) and am having problems locating files! I downloaded the Arduino IDE ( http://arduino.cc/ <-- for those not familiar with it) and am wanting to change the preference.txt file. It is supposed to be located in /home/carstentb/.arduino/preference.txt and I do believe it is, because in the program under "preferences" tab it tells me that is where the file is (and I can click it and it will open it). Yet when I try to find the file in the home folder application in Ubuntu, there is no '.arduino' file under 'carstentb' (which I'm assuming is just my home folder??). I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Toshiba laptop, and everything else is running great. Any help with this is appreciated! And I'm sorry for such a nube-ish question. Thanks!

When you open your Home folder, press: Ctrl +h this will show your hidden files and folders.
Folders and files with a . (dot) in front of them are the linux way to hide them from casual browsing.
