Just to prove how customizable ubuntu is, lets have a contest. Who can make their desktop look the most like windows using gnome or kde. The winner will get a hug.

To show it off to windows users. If I can have a familiar desktop with a better OS, maybe I can convert some friends. Also it would be a fun little thread.

Well, my desktop is semi windows like:
http://www.shaystephens.com/forum/ubuntu-desktop-6-21-06.jpg

I am using clearlooks for controls, human window borders, and human icons. I believe the background is the Mac aqua blue, and I have dragged the tool bar down to the bottom. I like to keep the menus for applications at the top and tool bars for the OS on the bottom.

You could just use Linux XP (http://www.tuxmachines.org/gallery/linuxxp/desktop3?full=1)

When are people going to start posting the first BSOD's then. Simply set the screensaver up for BSOD every 10 minutes and people will feel right at home. Also add as a cron job a script to reboot the machine once every half an hour.

Then you need to run a script to randomly change Firefoxes home page and to automatically redirect to www.pr0n.org. Then you add a script to post off firefoxes history to www.msn.com every 3 hours.

At that point even the Ballmer monkey would feel at home.

I agree. I disgusted myself in making it :(
I'm having post-traumatic flashbacks from just looking at it. I will need more therapy now.

You know I actually started a seperate user and session for this back in Breezy, but gave up after a while, contemplating the point and value of devoting time and energy to it.

But a hug you say? :-k

Maybe I'll start it again.

I would really be interested in this just because it would make the computer feel more comfortable for my parents (used to doing internet and Email in XP and don't learn new things easily). Also it would give me the peace of mind knowing they are running linux, so I can actually fix it if something does go wrong. So can people that participate post how-to's on how they accomplished it?

I know it isn't Gnome or KDE, but check this out. It looks almost identical to xp.

XPDE (http://xpde.com/)

I created an install script for XPDE, in case anyone's curious:
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/xpde

Unfortunately, it looks more like KDE than XP in some respects (the icons, for one).

Here's my submission to the contest. It's pretty close, but I couldn't find a good Windows icon set, and I couldn't get the Luna thing going on the toolbar. It's Xubuntu with the RedmondXP theme, a few icon changes, and a wallpaper change. I believe IceWM does a pretty good Luna imitation.

You mean something like this? (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/BlueScreen.html)
Btw, these are the guy's who first discovered Sony's rootkit.

Here's another submission--uses the XP wallpaper and IceWM's SilverXP theme.

Very interesting contest. In case I'd try to convert my family, something like this would come in handy.

You know, most of my friends got interested in Linux because it looked different from windows my mom learned where was everything in KDE in a matter of minutes, my girlfriend use my ubuntu laptop with Xubuntu with no problems, my cousin even uses alt + f2 to run amsn instead of using the menus....

So, no, making Linux looks like Winblows isn't the answer, the question is "are your parents, friend or whatever, ready to try something new?". My mom was impressed by the lots of card games included in KDE, my girlfriend asked me to teach her Linux because she wanted to get rid of viruses and spyware, my friends asked me to show them because i showed them the eyecandy some installed linux and other didn't but everyone who ask me to teach them how to use Linux is because they have some interest in it.

IMHO is a waste of time try to downgrade Linux DE's to look like the old windows theme.

BTW great joke about how to emulate windows :D.

Here's a Vista-looking screenshot I did last month. I'm not even going to try the 'My-First-Sony'-look of WinXP. I'd rather cut my hands :P
