Xubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal

I got the wallpaper from a stock wallpaper search, so I can't remember where I got it. I used gimp to get it the right size and there is a sharp line in the middle because I corrected for the bezel in dual screens. Left screen has hidden panel, so a little bit is cut off at the top.

Theme is Xubuntu Blackbird. Not making any major changes in a test version yet.

Theme is called "Darker" and I'm not sure where I got it. Sorry.

Wallpaper is also a stock panorama, cut to fit and bezel corrected. Again, I don't know where I got it.

On the left is an NX into another machine that I use to run BOINC on.

That's just a basic Unity theme. Stock photo of a black dog with a black background.

Nice! Looks like you got the Google Weather API figured out. Kudos!

I took a lot of heat (no pun intended) in the Conky Community, for introducing them to the XML engine. LoL! :D

Once you tweak the spacing/alignment for your display, that thing just works. I haven't had to touch those XSLT scripts in months.

Anyway, good job, man!

DingusFett

Thanks mate, yeah I found it quite easy to get it working. For the Google API bit, I came across the link in the shell script, guessed what it meant and then just followed the errors when running conky from terminal until I had the scripts pointing to the right directories. Apart from that was just as easy to swap things around, add and remove what I wanted and get the graphs in the right spot. The commenting in your .conkyrc makes it a breeze.

That's a nice bare KDE desktop, very very minimalist :) How do you access apps and tasks? Or does your dock/panel autohide?

Anyhow, here's my first screenshot of the month.

Full-size screenshots here:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/viperdvman/Screenshots/ScreenshotUbuKDE9d.jpg

I have the same wallpapers as before. However, I changed my interface from the typical Windows-style interface that's default for KDE Plasma to a Mac OS X style interface. It all started with an experiment that Max Blyss had started last month with his panel-less KDE desktop (post here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12056977&postcount=441)) and my response to it (my post here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12061027&postcount=451)).

Well, I was able to get the takeoff launcher to work very well in AWN via the xautomation package found in the repositories, which gives you the ability to type keyboard presses in command line. This post (here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11823588&postcount=67)) shows how I can use keyboard shortcuts in command line and make launchers out of them. Simple, you can set keybaord shortcuts to activate various plasma widgets, especially app menus. So I just set Takeoff Launcher's shortcut to Alt+F1, the same default shortcut that activates the GNOME Shell Activities menu... to keep it compatible between KDE and GNOME Shell. It's very very similar to how I had gotten the GNOME Shell Activities menu to activate via a launcher in AWN when I was running GNOME 3.2 in Ubuntu 11.10.

However, there's a huge bug going on with AWN in Ubuntu 12.04 right now. The little green plus signs in both the Task Manager applet and for the Simple Launcher show up every time I log back into my computer. The Task Manager plus is easy to work around. But it also kills whatever simple launcher I have (my takeoff launcher), which means I have to drag the .desktop file (launcher file) into the Simple Launcher every time I log into my computer, which is a real inconvenience. So without a known fix at this time, I had to ditch AWN for the time being... as sad as it is since I love using AWN. So making a panel-less KDE desktop using only AWN could prove very very difficult.

Todays:
http://ompldr.org/tZWtoeA (http://ompldr.org/vZWtoeA)

Dobson, you said you're running Pinguy, right? 12.04 version? If so, how'd you work around the green plus problem with the Task Manager applet in AWN?

Anyhow, my dock now is Docky. It's not my choice dock since it has fewer applets and configuration features than cairo-dock and AWN, but it works. I had figured out how to make launcher files for GNOME desktops outside of both AWN and GNOME 2 (Gnome Panel), which translate well to KDE desktops, and drag them into my Docky to make a launcher of them. On top of that, I used gconf to disable the Docky logo which looks tacky when using it in most distros. Next to my Takeoff Launcher (the magenta Ubuntu logo) is Dolphin, and the violet folder with the Zelda logo is a custom launcher that links to my Zelda fanfiction folder. It took a little bit of work to make a few launchers (including making my xautomation keyboard command as a launcher without AWN's Simple Launcher applet), but I now have a working Docky that translates pretty well across my desktop environments.

As for the top panel, the white Ubuntu logo is also the Takeoff Launcher (the plasma widget has to be there for the launcher in Docky to work). I have a different Plasma Activities manager (dropdown menu style instead of the default), and the plasma-widget-menu global menu. I removed the workspace switcher, show desktop, and places widgets so clean up the top panel to make it more Mac OS X like. And there you have it... an aesthetic and functional Mac OS X style interface for KDE.

I think that's great. My main issue is I have installed literally a couple hundred, perhaps more, guests in VirtualBox just to check them out and sometimes theme them and post screens. If I had to choose just one to run on metal I think I would enjoy spending the time also. Most don't live very long to put the time in. Not that there's anything wrong with any of them. Learning and accomplishing something is always good. :)

How functional is this setup for you? I have tried it before and it seems ok. Though i wish one wouldn't have to use mouse to focus the search box. Is there a shortcut?

Easy access to some important software, but it can be customized. it available through new activity creation, call search and launch. The search box is ok, easy look for things that not listed on the launch icons.

Thats all right. What i wanted to know was that if you can use this setup without any mouse or touchpad i.e. keyboard only, à la unity dash.

Here is mine a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 running on pretty old Asus Eee-Box B202:
OS: 12.04 32bit
DE: Unity 2D
Wallpaper: Default one that shipped with 12.04
Icon: Default

It runs surprisingly well, unlike Unity in 11.10, and I just installed it over lubuntu. Liking the result so I am going to keep it.

Not a bad Mac OS X style interface at all. Better than even mine. I still have some adjusting to do to mine to get it to look right on a narrower screen height.

Ubuntu 12.04 with Fluxbox.

Unity, KDE4, Gnome 3 all try to hard imo. They get in the way of my workflow and take up to much space. I like it simple and clean so I went with Fluxbox (also because I absolutely love the tabs (screenshot 2)).

Made the wallpaper myself in Gimp, took 1 minute.

Hatsune Miku, the international pop star... the virtual diva... an anime girl with a computerized singing voice. I'm going with a whole new theme this time, though sticking with the anime style. Those Hatsune Miku wallpapers are my custom-made collages, mostly using a stock wallpaper, an abstract wallpaper, and a number of Hatsune Miku concert screenshots. In addition, I changed the rest of my KDE themes to fit with the wallpaper. My previous Windows 7 screenshots, however, use a pair of stock Hatsune Miku wallpapers.

Second screenshot is of my Takeoff Launcher.

Loving Cinnamon, just needs to be a bit more stable. I'm confident they're making good progress. Zukitwo has very enjoyably forced me to turn my back on elementary. Very thorough and well integrated. Sure wish the AWN team would put up a Precise ppa :(, but this will do for now.

whew, lots of questions :D
First thanks :)
It's MATE. Transparency is using MATE's compositing and transset. You'd have to ask the developer of galculator why he put the menu there but it has settings in the drop down menu for things like number bases, angle units and notational modes. The 2012.32 is the year and whether it's a 32bit or 64bit install. I have so many Linux guests it's just a reminder to me what is what in screenshots.
Hope that answered all of the questions lol.

New install is slowly coming together. Calm and productive.

DE: Cinnamon w/Zola theme
GTK & Window: Zukitwo (which simply rocks!!)
Conky: custom
Wall: semi-custom
Dock: AWN

Loving Cinnamon, just needs to be a bit more stable. I'm confident they're making good progress. Zukitwo has very enjoyably forced me to turn my back on elementary. Very thorough and well integrated. Sure wish the AWN team would put up a Precise ppa :(, but this will do for now.

I changed the logo icon from File System - usr/share/unity/5.I copied/saved the "launcher_bfb.png" to home so I could put it back if I wanted the original. I found an image I wanted to use and re-sized it with gimp and renamed it launcher_bfb.png . I then replaced the original file. You will need root permission to replace the file.

Doing a test run of Descent OS 2.1, one of the last GNOME 2 based distros out there, and probably not for much longer since ver. 3 is in development. On top of that, it seems to be build on top of Ubuntu Natty, which is set to die in a few months anyway. The wallpapers are really nice, I'll give it that. Other than that, it's really no different than when I ran Ubuntu Natty with GNOME 2.32. I did remove the GNOME panel from the top, moved the bottom launcher to the top and resized it, added the Global App Menu, moved the Slingshot Launcher into Docky, removed the Docky item (the anchor logo), and added some launchers. On top of that, I even got dual monitors to work in it very well. Makes me wonder why I didn't do this in the first place when I had Natty (I still blame my old dual video card setup back then... I run a single dual-head card now)

It was a quick and easy Mac OS X style interface. As for the default, the top panel did look kind of tacky. Slingshot Launcher would've been better off somewhere in the bottom panel, like next to the GNOME Main Menu. Not a bad test run, but I'll wait til the MATE-based Descent OS 3 comes out and pass judgement.

Distro: Descent|OS 2.1
Desktop Environment: GNOME 2.32

well the reason I didn't use compositing was because it was suppose to look "flat". I normally overuse compositing :lolflag:

the top bar is a second panel. in XFCE you can have launchers display either an icon or text.

Seeing this desktop seriously makes me want to install KDE. Wow. It would be interesting to see how other apps integrate with this theme. You know... if this were KDEs default desktop, I would install it lickity-split. It looks clean and sharp - not the usual aesthetic disaster that seems to characterize nearly every other KDE distro.

definitely need to change the icon theme , any ideas ?

I'd suggest Malys-Blue - the blue of the icon design would go really nicely with the grey.

Very nice. A monochrome icon set would look good; perhaps Awoken (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/AwOken?content=126344) or ACYL (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Any+Color+You+Like?content=102435).

have just installed Awoken, will look at the ACYL

Isaac Joseph's Unity-revamped fixed everything I hated about unity includeing, disapearing menus, bringing back dodge windows on the launcher as well as adding minimise on click.

Thanks , it looks better on screen . Orange always looks crappy when compressed in a screen shot. I found logo on line and changed the dirty orange by adding some red.

I made some adjustments to my Bodhi desktop.

Full-size screenshots here:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/viperdvman/Screenshots/ScreenshotBodhi4a.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/viperdvman/Screenshots/ScreenshotBodhi4b.jpg

Just for this screenshot, I've shut off the secondary monitor. The nice thing is... I can turn it back on any time I want :) The biggest difference is my icon theme and changing from the Engage dock to a shelf with the News Gadget, IBar, and IBox. To me, it fits much better with my Hatsune Miku theme :)

Computer: Desktop
Distro: Bodhi Linux 1.4.0
Desktop Environment: E17 "Enlightenment"
Enlightenment Theme: AL-Grayish-Bodhi
GTK Theme: MurrinaAquamarine (from GNOME-Look.org)
Wallpaper: custom Vocaloid "Hatsune Miku collage"
Icons: ACYL (colored to match the Conky color)
Dock: an E17 shelf with News, IBar, and IBox gadgets
Apps in Dock: "News" gadget, "IBar" gadget with: PCManFM (file manager), Firefox, Google Chrome, Pidgin, Audacious, VLC, GIMP, LibreOffice Writer, gedit, LXTerminal, Synaptic, and System Monitor, "IBox" gadget with iconized apps.
Conky: Custom-made with "Usuzi Italic" font
Google Chrome Theme: "Hatsune Miku"

Yeah, in Unity. Thank you. There isn't an option to simply right-click on the menu bar and make it transparent, or a system setting for it, or something like Panel Settings?

No so you must use either My Unity or Gnome Tweak to make that sort of adjustment. :D

Well, actually you can manually edit $HOME/.compiz-1/metadata/unityshell.xml, or of course you can use a third-party app to do that for you. CCSM or Myunity would do, although I don't think Gnome Tweak has that option. It is for GNOME, after all.

It's not something I recommend doing for fear of breakage, but scroll down (for some reason, you have to be root-use the appropiate version of sudo) in your favourite editor until you reach the "panel_opacity" section. There, change the value between the <default> tags (it's 1.0 by default) to a number between 0 and 1, correct to one decimal place. 0.5 is an example. Then save the file, log out and in again.

As mentioned, prefer to use CCSM or other tool for this.
