The first beer is the most important one.

once visited at Kielder . UK

They had a real ale called Wylam Nouveau , very light but refreshing on a hot day,

That does not happen very often , it rains a lot, and the midges bit like . well you know what,
ESP on a hot summers day, :guitar:

Free.

As in software? I am confused.

Seriously beer can be libre, and/or gratis. I prefer beer that is libre in particular with respect to the ingredients and abides by the Bavarian Purity Law or Reinheitsgebot http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reinheitsgebot. It does not need to be gratis.

I rate beer thus:

If, part way through the evening, you find yourself standing at the urinal trying to bring the wall tiles in to focus, the beer was good.

If not, you need a larger sample.

tHIS IS A TRUE STORY , oOP'S

once upon a time,

went abroad with some friends , all got pulled at check in ,

our friend got took away , and return without his leg ,

anyway when we got to our destination , all had a good drink + a good laugh,

by the way the leg was returned before boarding , guess what we did on the plane.

end another bedtime story,

good night all.

If I'm buying beer, it's always Asahi. Any beer is good when you don't pay for it though :P

In order of preference:

Abbot Ale
London Pride
Old Speckled Hen
Mad Monk
Skull Splitter (Orkney)
Hobgoblin
(from here on the list just grows and grows)

I can't stand lager, and have actively avoided it for over 20 years now.

Cheers! :)

So many, so lovely, tried a lot and have a lot more to try.

One of our local (South Africa) brands. They recently relaunched the beer and I must say on tap it is divine! I was at a promo 2 weeks ago and they gave you dark chocolate to go with the beer and I must say the effect of the chocolate on your palate followed by a sip of the stuff is amazing. It's also cheap over here seeing it's a local SA brand, US$2.30, £1.50, £1.84 or ¥185 for a 500ml draught. This stuff is better than Guinness to me.

I'm actually amazed that you can find Castle Milk Stout in Japan (or did you have it somewhere else?).

I had it in South Africa. I was there for a month a few years ago. I liked all the Castle beers but the Milk Stout was just amazing. I dont normally drink dark beers, but I fell in love with this one. Its creamy, yet not as heavy as a Guinness. If only they had it in Japan:(

As far as I know SAB does not have any operations in Japan but maybe try and search for a independent beer importer, you never know...

Yuengling is my go to beer. It's got a great taste to price ratio being nearly as cheap the cheap beers but tasting a lot better. I especially like their Black & Tan. I also really like Newcastle.

Any beer I can shtumble away from ish a good one.

Current fave would have to be Shock Top, Belgian Wheat. But on a really hot day, I forgo the beer and grab myself a "Hard Arnold". Get your head out of the gutter, It's a drink. Iced tea, and Mike's Hard Lemonade mixed 50/50. It's called "Arnold" in honor of Arnold Palmer who used to drink a 50/50 mix of Iced tea and Lemonade.

Love Guinness.

I live in the PNW of the US. A lot like Germany. Practically every town has microbreweries and brew pubs. Portland and Seattle must have hundreds each.

I like to try them all.

Wow....this thread just took me back maybe 20 years!

Just after I bought me first 9600 baud modem and had an account with Compuserve (?). I used to go on various news groups, remember them, and one was all about beer.

My response was always Boddingtons BTW!

I wouldnt wash the mud off my shoe with Budweiser..

Best Dark Beer (Stouts), Guinness and Young's Double Chocolate Stout are neck and neck.

Best light beer (Lager), Dos XX Equis. "I dont always drink beer, but when I do I drink Dos Equis. Stay thirsty my friends."

Best Big Beer (Ale), Chimay Triple Belgium Ale. Brewed by Monks in Belgium for many many years. Even God approves this beer.

Having quaffed beer all over the world for many decades I've come to a few conclusions;

1. With the exception of micro-breweries, none (or very little) was brewed in N. America.

2. So called global brands such as Guinness, vary enormously depending on which continent you buy it (the Dublin stuff is great but Hong Kong's variant tastes like it's been brewed with a a Marine's boot).

3. Good lager, if that is your taste, predominantly originates in the Germanic/Nordic countries + Belgium.

4. For me nothing compares to a traditional English bitter ale such as Young's or Shepherd Neames's - And serve it at the correct temperature without all that added fizz!!
