Visiting from out of town and I'm trying to help my mother-in-law upgrade her Dell Mini netbook to the lastest version of Ubuntu in order to update everything (i.e. Firefox, etc.)

Any advice on the most streamlined way to achieve this and whether jumping directly from Hardy Heron is possible.

I'm downloading the ISO file now.

Thank you in advance!!

it is not possible to jump directly. you will first need to upgrade to 10.04 and then to 12.04.

however during this time so much has changed that perhaps a best way would be to do a fresh install. and prior to it to check if it all work well. you might need to use Xubuntu or Lubutnu now as Ubutnu became a lot heavier. it is also very different (Unity, Gnome 3...). so the person using it before might be better off with Xubuntu (as it looks mor elike the old Gnome).
