If you were fortunate enough to have 32 GB of RAM on your computer, what sort of things could you do? If you 'only' had 16 GB, would that make much difference? Do you think there will be much demand from future applications for enormous amounts of RAM?

Thank you!

"640K of memory should be enough for anybody." -Bill Gates 1981 (He really never said it (http://www.wired.com/politics/law/news/1997/01/1484))

I am sure one day we will look at 32GB of RAM like we look at 640K now.

For a server running a couple of VM's, 32GB isn't all that much...

Edit: Is this a thread for the AB?

I know many people that only have 1GB or 2GB of RAM and they get by.

Unless you running lots of applications open or playing game and I don't know any game that will eat up 2 GB or 3 GB of RAM.

If you getting a new computer get aleast 4 GB of RAM.

Unless you a pro users you will not use more than 4 GB of RAM.

Man! My laptop is maxed at 2GB and the "new" computer (corporate raffled) computer can reach 8 GB and I thought THAT was alot!

If you are running Windows, you need that RAM, but if you are running Linux the options are endless!

I've considered setting up my (potentially) 8 GB system with a VM system and have it auto-boot into an Ubuntu VM but be able to run additional ones easily enough. I'm starting to get lazy and shy away from that idea, though.

Virtualize like a boss. Compile libboost in an ordinate amount of time.

:lolflag:

I'd see how many windows it is possible to open simultaneously.

You dont think 32Gb is possible ? are you being sarcastic or trolling?

I have 32Gb in my desktop, what amounts do you think Servers run ?

In theory Linux on x64 can support upto 16 exabytes

Not with most desktop motherboards, no. But get yourself the right hardware and it's doable.

With a few exceptions like virtualization, that much RAM is a bit over the top...about 24 gigs over the top. :D

I remember posting a question just like this about 2 months ago.

Few things that were put to my attention was changing some of your cache settings on a few programs like firefox to use system ram for storage which could speed up browsing performance.

Most new motherboards support 32, a few still only go to 16GB. Have to check the specs on the system board your purchasing.

I wish I still had my Trash 80.

Audio volume on cassettes was a constant battle back then across the board, but the god damn trash 80 was the worst for adjustment needed.

The amount of times i watched the blinking cursor only to realize that nothing had loaded at all....LOL

In the UK we used to be able to record software over the radio for it, i dont think you guys in the US had that ?

Not that I recall.

But <insert deity of choice here> help you if you had a cheap Tandy cassette player that ate your tape!
