Sound output defaults to Digital Output (S/PDIF)

I would like to set speakers or headphones as the default sound output. Currently if I unplug headphones, Digital Output becomes selected even though speakers later appear as an option. Then if I plug in, say, external speakers, I get no sound because Digital is still selected.

Using 12.04 on Thinkpad R61i

I hav the exact same problem, as soon as I plug/unplug my headphones the sound defaults to this mysterious S/PDIF that doesn't work. May you please share you solution?

Actually I somehow solved it. I was just clicking around between the options in the sound settings and it just started working...
