What does staying up REALLY late-like till 3 AM-do to you?
I'm starting to see the Unity sidebar bend and the world is rocking back and forth like a boat.

Usually I just get heavy - eyed and go to sleep...

The sidebar bending just might have something to do with Alcohol... The stuff's really sneaky.:lolflag:

I normally only stay up till that kind of hour if i'm Xbox gaming. Have been known to wake up in the middle of the night, on the couch, freezing cold, with an Xbox controller in my hands :)

Go to bed, dude! Bending sidebars and rocking worlds don't sound too flash :)

Depends on how old you are. I only sleep about 4 hours per day.

Adults that go totally without sleep for 4 days or so, will start to halucinate.

Keep doing that long enough and you can even get rushed to a hospital and be put on IV watch for a week or so due to exhaustion. True (and personal) story too.

My eyes start getting dry, and I get tired. That's it. I don't see anything weird, etc.

LOL....depends on how much you sleep! If you are an early riser that bending Unity bar may become "normal" :)

I can testify to this; that was a very bad week.

Seriously you spend too much time in front of the screen you will burn your eyes out.

About 6 six weeks ago I started having a problem focusing on the screen. I left it for a few days to see if it would clear up, it didn't. At this point I couldn't sit in front of the screen for more than 10 minutes without my eyes really hurting.

They checked my eyes out thoroughly. It turns out because my eyes where becoming dry and I was constantly rubbing them, I actually ended up scratching the lens on my right eye.

They gave me some gel to apply to the front of my eye. Thankfully my right eye is a lot better now. I can focus again.

The hospital suggested the following for long periods in front of the screen.

1) Keep your eyes refreshed, get some eye drops apply two or three times a day.

2) Remember to blink. I know it sounds stupid, but we don't blink enough.

3) Take regular breaks away from the screen.

Hospital told me they get quite a few people through the doors with the same problems.

Working shifts and maximizing off time I have found myself doing 36 hours + awake... so going past 3am is kind of meh :p

PS - Don't try this at home... well ok, if you are going to try it better to do it at home...

I work shifts, it just so happens my knock-off time is 3AM these days (which is a lot more civilised than it used to be). So the first night I do I'll be waking up at 7AM and staying up past 3AM.

I get a bit tired. Caffeine helps, but it's not a good idea to have lots. No biggy really, but I'm starting to feel it more as I get older. I'm only in my 30s, but don't want to still be doing shift work when I'm in my 40s. Long-term it's not good for you, and takes years off your life.

Around 3:00 AM my body tries a "forced-shutdown"; I get cold and like something is injecting a ground-up sleeping pill into my system. I often also get very hungry at that time. My vision would get less-than-clear, my head get cloudy and sometimes it would be so bad I couldn't read the screen.

If I manage to push past that, then like a heavy blanket being lifted off of me, the tiredness goes away and my body temperature returns to normal. Although sometimes I am still hungry.

Usually my body doesn't try to "shut down" itself after that failed attempt.

Whenever I do this, or pull and all-night-er, I try and make sure I go to bed the following night at my REGULAR time. Not too early, and no afternoon naps or that messes my sleeping pattern up and makes it harder to get back into the rhythm.

When my kids were babies and I got duty at 3:00AM, Linux was a good, good friend. I would prop the baby up on my shoulder in such a way he or she (depending on which baby) isn't going to roll or fall off even if I were to fall asleep, and make sure at least one hand is open for typing on the keyboard or using the mouse! :lolflag:

I haven't done this in a long time, but I am running on about 1 week of going to bed at 1 AM + and having to get up around 6 to go to work!

Smartphones rule at this. Always there in your pocket no matter how tired and forgetful your are, able to produce soothing white noise for babies, and produce ebooks, games and the internet for parents.

Our new one is due in September. Last baby I managed to read about half the Sherlock Holmes books, this time round I better get them finished because we sure as hell aren't having any more after that!

In the music business 3am is like 5pm to a day worker. At 3am the gig is over and most of the time the gear is in truck .. time to drive to the next town .. get there at sunrise and go to bed.

i wouldn't worry about the hours too much. i don't think it matters much when you sleep, as a student i used to normally stay up till 4.30 or 5 am, and then sleep until about 11 and i didn't notice any ill effects (except academically, a bit). just so long as you do get enough sleep.

if you're seeing odd visual effects, that could be a result exhaustion. although, as many people have pointed out for most people, all-nighters (depending on their age) are really quite ok.

At the time I was doing this, I was running Gentoo on a P3 500Mhz system and a dial-up modem. There was plenty of "down" time :)

We never planned any one of them, and we never regretted any of them either!

Although now after spending one school year with the youngest in (all day) 1rst grade the idea of giving up that "freedom" time makes the chances of having any more about Frosty's chance in Hades! :lolflag:

It makes me grab a few cups of coffee more when I get to work in the morning, before the fun begins. ;)

I do my best thinking when it's late. Everything gets kind of fuzzy and stuff fits together better. I do try not to go too late though, as I'll feel really bad in the morning. At 6. When my DIY-mad neightbours wake up. -.-

I naturally don't need much sleep - 4h of sleep has been normal since Grade 7.

Perfect, because I work as a audio/video production specialist, and am currently studying for my pyrotechnics liscence.

Then again, falling 100m can easily get anyone to full wakefulness.

You lucky lot with your 4 hours sleep, if I get less than 6 I'm a complete mess.

As for the OP I'm a recovering insomniac, so staying awake between 3-9am is easy for me, but I don't recommend you do it, most jobs don't start at 4pm.

I should have posted before I went to bed. It wasn't 3 AM, but it was 2 AM! Close enough (for gov't work :lolflag:)

I think I am reaching one full week of shortened sleep nights. Tonight, I need to start going to bed at a reasonable hour again!

Unfortunately I've had to use Windows for this past week but after today I can switch back to my Linux hard drive... means updates and tweaking and all those little things that make me look up and find it's after midnight!

So maybe better luck tomorrow night....

One time, while I was taking a C++ course in college we were working on our group project final, and I was up for 40+ hours straight with the help of lots of energy drinks and the adrenaline of working on the code. I remember going to work without ever going to sleep at the end of this and I was working customer service at the time for a computer company. I took a call and when I was done, I didn't remember the call and I looked at my notes in the call manager software and saw a bunch of notes about a sailboat and the moon. I asked to go home sick and went to sleep, but we got an A!

I'm like not found, I work an overnight shift, and quite often i go 30 hours or more without any sleep, I've currently been up for just short of 24 hours, and expect I won't get to bed for another 7 hours or so.

As a 24hr shift worker I can only envy those of you who feel your body shutdown at night. I live in a world of constant jet lag. I sometimes go weeks where I am getting 2-4 hours sleep per night, awake for 48 hours at a time or sleeping every 8-12 hours. Not out of choice but because my circadian rhythm goes haywire or the coffee I used to keep myself awake in the day is keeping me up all night.

For me there is nothing more wonderful than a good 10 hour sleep where I actually remember my dreams.

Don't mess with your sleep patterns if you don't need to. It does have its consequences if you do it all the time. Not having enough sleep is dangerous and not a measurement of how tough you are.

If I'm up at 3:00 it's in a horizontal position with a movie running. I worked 5:00 pm to 5:00 am for one job and wouldn't wish that on anyone, but as least it wasn't a rotating shift.

A Chinese guy died of exhaustion last week after staying up all night for a week straight to watch all the Euro 2012 games then heading to work (time difference meant he was up all night). He was getting a few hours sleep each day after work but none at all each night. If memory serves he was in his early twenties...

I used to stay up that late. Then I got into running and had to start waking up early.

I've never seen the Unity launcher bend before though.

For a while I would work all-night for a friend and then drive to my regular job. Scariest moment was when I found myself drifting off at one point (which woke me up quickly)! I forced myself to get at least some sleep when I could, or to make sure I am well rested before and after pulling an all-nighter!

I stay up to 2AM every night, and i love it! It is quiet and i can do so much college work at 12AM at night easily when the brat is sleeping upstairs in my apartment. I get the best of boths worlds of mourning and night since i only need 6 hours to function.
