So I remember in the days of gnome2 I could simply adjust the transparency of my panels and use an emerald theme to make my window borders transparent. However emerald doesn't work well when I tried it last on 11.10 with gnome. I've heard it does work well with XFCE but I want to stick with gnome (unity).

I've been looking at the Theme/gtk-3.0/apps/gnome-panel.css file but haven't found the value that governs the colour of the top panel. Nor do I understand the gradients that are being used. Could anyone give details on what values to edit in order to change the top panel and the window borders?

Here's a picture of the emerald theme http://gnome-look.org/CONTENT/content-pre1/121908-1.png
it's also like in window 7 and 8 where you can choose to have a transparent bottom panel with no colour.
