Will DVD-R even work in Wine. There is a Nero for Linux out there if you absolutely have to use it.

Just a suggestion from a former Windows user, who relied heavily on Windows easy to use gui software to do this stuff.

Get Tovid, it has a GUI but the GUI is in dire need of some updating since it is several releases behind, so just get the Tovid program.

Once you have it installed, you open up a terminal and just type a few key things....

For example.... change to the directory where your video files are stored. If you video files are stored in a folder called videos you would type

cd videos

Then once you are in the directory, for example you have a video called sample.avi, so to convert to a DVD compliant .mpg that K3B can burn as a DVD Video disc you would type the following...

tovid -in sample.avi -dvd -ntsc -out sampleenc

You do not need to put an extension on sampleenc.

Then make the menu by typing the following. keep in mind you can type whatever you want in the " "

makemenu "Sample Menu" \
-out Sample

Then you need to make the disc structure...adding menu to associated files you converted.

makexml \
-menu Sample.mpg \
sampleenc.mpg\
-out SampleDisc

Once that is done you can create the Video_TS folder simply by typing...

makedvd SampleDisc

Then you can use K3B to burn these files to a DVD and off you go.

Granted you menus will not be pretty but they are functional.

Now there are other programs out there like DVDStyler, Devede etc that will make fancy menus and such....

My point is that there are ways to get to your destination, you just have to learn a little bit more about which road to take. Above all else dont give up!!!

there are severl good programs out ther for converting files to dvd-ntfc which is grate if you live in america but i live in england and we are pal so converting to ntfc is no good for me as my dvd player wont play. in responce to the first reply for burning dvd's i will always youse kb3 over nero any day it is nero vison express i asked about and if anyone can tell me how to install it on wine or give me a kb3 or other linux program that will turn any vido format (not just avi's) to a dvd format in pal i would be realy gratefull i would rather go down the road of finding a linux program to do it but in the absence of that i am froced to use wine and try to install the windows verson

Perhaps DeVeDe can do that?

Sir, I would like to point out that Tovid does encoding for both PAL and NTSC.

You really should read up on it, because it will do what you are requesting. Its not that hard to use.

fetch yourself a deb from

http://tovid.sourceforge.net/download/kubuntu/

double-click to install

don't bother compiling unless the deb doesn't work

by the way, the command is simply

sudo make install

i am haveing grate sucsess with tovid it just seems to stop at the makexml comand have just reinstalled tovid am going to try again i am working in the gui as i need to get all this working in gui setting as i am converting frends over to ubunt from windows and they will only use gui's
the error i am getting is Provide a list of .mpg video files, and they will be played back in
sequence. You may organize several lists of videos into menus by
providing the name of a menu .mpg:

makexml -menu menu1.mpg \
video1.mpg video2.mpg video3.mpg \
-out mydisc
makexml -topmenu topmenu.mpg \
-menu submenu1.mpg vid1.mpg vid2.mpg vid3.mpg \
-menu submenu2.mpg vid4.mpg vid5.mpg vid6.mpg \
-out mydisc2

See the makexml manual page ('man makexml') for additional documentation.
==========================================
Please provide an output filename with -out.
can you help ??
