I'm trying to make the toolbar at the top of the desktop transparent, similar to how it looks on the logon screen.

i've been given a tip on this before (involving some sort of software) which did not work because my video card is not 3D desktop compatable.

I'm running ubuntu 12.04 with everything default (unity ect.)

thanks in advance,

Did you try and see if it was in Gnome Tweaks?

The setting could be found in ccsm or Ubuntu Tweak. For ccsm, Unity Plugin > Experimental > Panel Opacity. For Ubuntu Tweak, Tweaks > Unity > Panel Opacity.

EDIT: Kinda missed the part that you said about your graphic card. Transparency is only possible for compositing windows manager, such as Compiz.

If you are using Unity 2D transparency isn't possible. You need 3D compatible graphics. If you have not run the Unity 3D test use the following command.
/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p
