I want to install Ubuntu on my laptop - a Dell Vostro 1000. I think it has at least some malware, Trojan or virus. I don't want to keep the old operating system - Windows xp, in fact there is nothing that I on the hard disc that I want to keep. What is the best way for me to install Ubuntu 12.04.

Thanks

You can start here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community

I would recommend partitioning the hard disk with a separate /home folder. Later upgrades will allow you to keep all of your documents and settings.

I've recently come across this helpful site with a very nice tutorial.

it looks like that has 512 ram, you might prefer other operating systems based on ubuntu, like xubuntu, lubuntu or bodhi linux.

In that case, I would suggest you burn yourself some LiveCDs and test it out on your system before actually installing.

If you dont want the other os and dont want anything on the drive then it would be ok to go ahead and do a full ubuntu install from scratch, Pop in the live cd and follow the steps.

With only 512MB of ram you might want to go with Lubuntu, But you can try out Ubuntu to see if it will work.

Upgraded the RAM and I installed from a CD... all fine. Thanks.
