I use gaim and love it. Is there any good text based IM clients?

as in console mode? try nAIM. all the fun of aim with all the charm of irssi.

There's one called centericq which I've used quite often, over SSH sessions and stuff. Depsite it's name, it supports all the protocols like GAIM, and is very good.

You could also try BitlBee. It works almost everywhere. Also behind a firewall that for example blocks any traffic but http (at work/school and stuff).

Especially check out their screenshot section ;-).
