I recently received a wonderfully built *sarcasm* Compaq Presario 5184 as my old tower was just too fast for me (hdd busted and cant load an os on it). This pc im on now has win 98 (1st edition), came with a 95 mhz processor and 64 mb of ram, ive increased the ram to 448 mb (sdram). Is there any OS, Ubuntu or otherwise, that i could run on this? Its ridiculously slow, has no usb support for flash drives, and when i try to load a flash game online, it starts setting up a chair and a noose for itself. Pardon the humor, its my only means left to deal with the fact i was told this one would be newer to only find out its ARCHAIC. Ive checked the forums and cannot find an answer to an already posted question that would help me. If all else fails and an OS is not gonna help me, is there anyway to upgrade the processor or am i better off with the baseball bat and buying an etch a sketch? ](*,) [-o<

You might try LUbuntu 10.04 LTS and run from the command line. You'll have 1 year of support left after that it's over because all newer Buntu flavors need CMOV support and I don't expect your processor to have that.

Your processor (probably socket 7) is a bit slow. I have one of the last of the socket 7 AMD K6-2 (500 MHz), which is acceptable speedwise.

You could try the Puppy Linux It is very light and maybe it will help you. They say it is a linux for old computers. They have even a song (you may check it on the home page). :)

Damn Small Linux (click (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damn_Small_Linux)) is good OS for old computers as well.
