Ubuntu 12.04 Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard F-keys

I had the function keys (F-keys) on the Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 working under Ubuntu 10.04 but they don't work under Ubuntu 12.04. This means I can't get a console with Ctrl-Alt-F1, for example.

Can anyone point me to a post which describes a fix for these keys?

Through the magic of upgrades, all function keys now work, with no effort or any change on my part.
