View Full Version : [all variants] When computer sleeps/suspends fans go to max

I installed on a new system recently and I have an issue with the case fans.

They're plugged into PWM 4-pin ports and usually they're fine.

However, when I leave the PC unattended and the monitor shuts off and it's either suspended or asleep or something, they fans suddenly spin up to max for no reason. It's obnoxious and noisy.

Once I move the mouse or hit the keyboard it wakes up and the fans slow back down in around 10 secs or so.

Really obnoxious, and the only things I've found googling were not helpful.

PC uses a Xeon E3-1230 V2 and ASRock Z77-based Mobo, A Pro4-M I think.

I've come across some stuff that indicates this behavior could variously be caused by
a) a Kernel bug
b) screensaver
c) compiz

I got rid of screensaver package, guess I'll see what happens.

Update: screensaver package didn't seem to cause any change.

Pretty much the second the monitor blanks from idle the fans start spinning up, and based on CPU temps after logging in, I think they CPU is doing something.

Gagghhh! This is driving me crazy. It's basically forcing me to turn my computer off all the time.
