Hello.
I have this very annoying problem since I re-installed Xubuntu 12.04 on my netbook (HP Mini 100e). The battery icon is missing from the panel, sometimes replaced with a "lighting" as if it was charging. It is set to be always present, but when I click to show it when the battery is present or any other option in the dropdown menu there, it disappears.
I've tried different solutions I found in other threads but nothing seems to work with me. I've changed the theme, the size of panel, remove/re-install indicator-power but nothing is working.
I would really appreciate some help with this as it's getting quite annoying.
Thank you.

I take it that you are running just off the battery (i.e. unplugged from the wall)?

I have the same problem in Ubuntu with xfce-desktop, I thought that maybe it was just because my battery is full and my laptop is plugged in but unplugging, still no battery icon.
