View Full Version : [ubuntu] 12.04 with geforce 4 ti4200 no drivers?

HI all, complete linux newbie here...

I installed 12.04 on my AAO 522 netbook a few weeks ago and was sold :) it worked brilliantly.

I thought i would try it on my desktop computer too so i got the 32 bit version and it installed just fine, the only exception being the video card. ( nvidia gf4 ti4200 128mb)

It can only load unity 2d and that runs pretty slow. In system details it displays graphics as unknown.

I tried Enlightment DE to see if it would speed it up but It was also slow and seemed a bit buggy. Some windows would open in the unity style?? Ive since unistalled it. I am considering installing XFCE and some others but i think the graphics drivers need sorting first or im wasting my time.

System specs:

Pentium 4 3.0ghz HT
2.0 gig RAM
AGP geforce 4 ti4200 128mb
Creative SB live 5.1 soundcard
40gig Primary hard drive triple boot: win XP home, PClinuxOS and ubuntu 12.04
200gig secondary storage HD.

Is it possible to get the gf4 card working properly or do i give up on 12.04?

After some more research it appears im out of luck, the drivers on nvidias website will not work with 12.04. http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-ia32-96.43.20-driver.html

Apparently they wont install because of the updated Xorg in 12.04 A thread on nvidia forum with many users asking for an updated gf4 driver version does not look promising. http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=179489

I guess i can downgrade to an older ubuntu version, upgrade my graphics card, or try some other linux distro.
