New high-speed USB device -just how many during first boot?

First boot after installing 12.04

Just how many times will it check? I have been watching as it checks every device number from 1 to 127 several times, been watching it for more than an hour. Is this normal?

i'm still watching it do this. I tried rebooting a couple times to see if it would clear. No one has seen this behavior?
