View Full Version : Possiblity of Ubuntu Tablet?

I am considering the purchase of a tablet in the near future. I'd really like to buy one now, but I've become indecisive about waiting for a possible Ubuntu tablet instead.

It's a major purchase for me, and it's not like I'll be able to buy another one in a year if there's suddenly an Ubuntu one available (hence my indecision).

I'd be interested to hear about any related rumors people have come across, or maybe just predictions you might have.

What does everyone think?

Ubuntu 11.04 -> introduction of Unity.
Unity -> A more Tablet oriented user interface
Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04 -> improved versions of Unity

===>> No there will not be a tablet, obviously :lolflag:

I think the Vivaldi tablet with KDE probably is your best bet: http://makeplaylive.com/
(Not Ubuntu, but it's Linux!)

I like the low price point on that Vivaldi tablet.

Do you suppose it would be able to run Ubuntu with Unity?
I've rejected Unity on the desktop, but I still want to give it a shot on a tablet.

Mer (a continuation of MeeGo) & KDE's Plasma Active are optimized for tablets.

A standard Ubuntu installation isn't really optimised for tablets. While the interface of Unity would be interesting on tablets, it is probably not ready for tablets yet.

can have a look here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29

another possibility is with / the integra3 , which in reality will be nearly same spec as the next Ipad . the tests look promising.

Some where in Here , but also a site worth visiting

Well, there's Ekoore (http://www.ekoore.com/web/en/product/tablet-2/python-s-2/specifiche-2.html), as in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEXmBnUIp8o). It's a tablet you can actually buy with Ubuntu installed. But I think it's more of a "slate", technically, with an x86 (Intel Atom) chip instead of ARM, and it's not price-competitive.

A hangup for Ubuntu on ARM is that vendors will have to compile any third-party binary software for the platform. Which is fine if the software is Chrome and Flash, since Google is more than likely to offer support, but not so fine for anything else, like additional drivers.

You could install Ubuntu to run nativtely on the HP touchpad. I think it runs 12.04 with wifi and bluetooth.

I have a HP touchpad i already have it booting web OS and android ICS. I am considering adding Ubuntu into to mix. But it dont really see the point as i have a ubuntu laptop.

Ubuntu for Android is a system so that you can use Ubuntu when the phone or tablet is docked. When it's not docked (ie: 95% of the time) you'd be using the normal Android interface.

Penguinnerd: if this is, as you say, a major purchase just go with the stable, mature, well supported options of Android or IOS. Even if Ubuntu rolled out on a tablet tomorrow it would likely take a year or two to shake all the bugs and kinks out.
