DVI and HDMI is the most common way to connect laptops and other devices to a TV. Is it possible to accomplish the same thing using Bluetooth? if not, what is holding it back? Is it the speed, etc...

Audio/Video Distribution Transport Protocol (AVDTP)

you can code it yourself, but is not industry specific.

Actually, it is being done (sort of) - WiFi from the iPad and the router, which goes to Apple TV, which goes to your TV. WiFi(IEEE 802.11) and Bluetooth are similar. Apple are by far not the first ones to do so - smart TV's date to 1993 in France. Also, all streaming media devices work through WiFi (RCA Wi-Fi Streaming Media Player).

Speed is the big part of the equation, but it's not one of the goals of Bluetooth, especially as there are standards around to do this.

Wireless HDMI is implemented by Samsung and it's specifically for this purpose.

Bluetooth is not fast enough, and not supported by any TVs, sorry.

Exactly, it's not made for that.

Bluetooth goes up to 24Mbit/s, while HDMI goes up around 10Gbit/s. I'm sure the speeds are enough. And while there are Bluetooth TV's today, I think LG has them, it is used to transmit audio, not video.
