Well, as the title says. I am in 'need' of a laptop, but because this is the first time I am buying a laptop, I need some feedback.

I will use the laptop primarily to increase productivity while I am travelling. I will be travelling atleast 3 hours a day, so a good batterylife is necessary. I will also be using it for some heavy computations from time to time, the batterylife for normal office work(excel, word, the usual) should be around 5 or 6 hours (My own estimate, feel free to criticize).
The main software packages I will be using on it:

Matlab (no excessively long computational tasks)
Office suite (Probably MS, because of 'track changes' :-\" )
ArcGIS (Primarily used for viewing maps and small tasks)
Some programming environment(C++, Ruby, Python)

And ofcourse some small programs such as an audioplayer .
Gaming, watching movies and other fancy multimedia stuff is not relevant to me.
I need it to run windows, but I want it to dual boot in Dapper drake.

I am interested in the Lenovo Thinkpad T60, the bottom model(I can get it for around 1400 euro's inc. VAT). It's specs can be found here (http://http://www5.pc.ibm.com/nl/products.nsf/$wwwPartNumLookup/_UD0F3NI?OpenDocument).

Now I'm not worried about most of it's specs, but I do have doubts about the screen resolution. Is 1024x768 enough for a 14" screen? I am used to working with 15" screens of which I am pretty sure have the same resolution, but how is it on a laptop?

I wasn't able to find any competitors which offer similar features, but perhaps some of you know a laptop which does have similar features. To sum it up I need: A good batterylife, a decent amount of computational power and a sturdy, carriable design and weight.

And one final question, I need a good bag for it. The problem isn't as much the bag itself, but what does make for a good laptopbag protection wise? Most vendors advertise a "laptop compartment" but do not specify what kind of protection this compartment offers.

I would look into Fujitsu for good battery life with some models(Lifebook P7120) you get up to 11 hours, sounds perfect for what you need. They also have the AMD turion and Intel dou-core. also you can't beat the weight at about 3lbs and some even less.

Fujitsu Notebooks (http://store.shopfujitsu.com/fpc/Ecommerce/productoverview.do?type=NB&pgid=Notebooks)

Good luck and have fun.

(also I have a friend of mine that dual-boots XPsp2 and Ubuntu 6.06 on his tablet-convertible, everything "Just Works" with a little tweaking to get the tablet part working)
