After reinstalling my Brother MFC-8820D multifunction machine (which now is printing correctly), my attempts to use the Synaptic Package Manager yield the following error message:
"E: The package mfc8820dlpr:i386 needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it."
When I close the popup displaying this error message, Synaptic closes.
I need Synaptic. What can I do to fix this problem?
Edit: I've discovered that this error also prevents the Software Center and the Update Manager from working.
Help, please.

I hope this gives someone an idea of what I need to do.
How can I "manually fix" the mfc8820dlpr package?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Continuing the story of my attempts to solve this problem:
I decided that since I have on my system a copy of the file that I think Synaptic is complaining about, I could try installing it directly. Here is the Terminal output that resulted:
ron@ron-desktop-linux:~/BrotherScannerAndPrinter$ ls
BR8820_2.PPD
Brother Solutions Center Brother Driver for Linux Distributions_files
Brother Solutions Center Brother Driver for Linux Distributions.html
brscan-0.2.4-0.amd64.deb

linux-brprinter-installer-1.0.3-1.gz
mfc8820dlpr-1.1.2-1.i386.deb
ron@ron-desktop-linux:~/BrotherScannerAndPrinter$ sudo apt-get install mfc8820dlpr-1.1.2-1.i386.deb

E: The package mfc8820dlpr:i386 needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
ron@ron-desktop-linux:~/BrotherScannerAndPrinter$
IOW, my attempt to re-install the actual package failed.
I continue to need help. Please.
