Good question. I have had a lot of request to join it. But wasnt sure if it was just spam.

I don't have any spam problems with Linkedin and it is a good networking tool. I had to join as part of a job networking program at collage.

The group I belong to shares information about job/career opportunities often before they appear anywhere else which is of great value.

Having contacts outside of your area of interest is good thing also because they may know people that are willing to help in your own career quest . I don't use it as a social medium though.

It can be helpful if you are looking to network. I've gotten one job offer nearly fresh out of college and with less-than-stellar credentials, so I imagine it could do great things for someone with a good background.
