blank screen after install

ive done my reading installing 12.04 on brand new board and chip
amd apu with asrock mobo with ati chipset no video during install
used the nomodeset option
installation went fine
on reboot after install hit shift key to bring up grub
no grub comes up
there is a driver available for the video card
reinstalled tried it again
no grub comes up to edit
how do i get grub to come up so i can edit it and then install the driver?

I have also experienced the blank screen issue when trying to use 12.04. It appears to occur when I try to use the standard "Ubuntu" selection after turning on the computer. However, when I choose the "Ubuntu 2D" selection, I am able to get in without experiencing the blank screen.

im not able to see any options at all
this is not shaping up to be a good experience as i have been working
on installing this for 2 days
