Why is this thread now called Unity screenshots?
Are people to assume it's for only those that use Unity and excludes others?

Unity.......

oneness of mind, feeling, etc., as among a number of persons; concord, harmony, or agreement.

the state or fact of being united or combined into one, as of the parts of a whole; unification.

Or is this too hard.

Got a pair of screenshots... my first for the month.

Same Ubuntu 12.04 with KDE 4.8.3 installed on top of it (Ubuntu/Kubuntu updated their KDE Plasma). I'm still running the same themes on the main "Desktop" Plasma Activity. Here, I am showing off my News Feeds activity. The wallpapers are merely placeholders for now, since the forest wallpapers don't fit with my more gothic desktop theme. That is my custom-made Link & Saria wallpaper, borrowing an image from http://www.thezeldaproject.net/ (they haven't updated in a while). I'll update the wallpapers on my other activities to fit the desktop in the near future.

The KDE Splash that I'm showing off is one I too custom-made. Making a KDE Splash isn't overly difficult. All I did was take a splash from KDE-Look, copy it, and manipulate the background images and translucent rectangle accordingly, and redo some of the code to fit it. On top of that, I had to make the backgrounds in the correct resolutions, or at least the correct ratios (16:9, 16:10, etc.). I thought I'd make a KDE Splash for those who install KDE on top of Ubuntu like I do. Maybe I should upload that to KDE-Look :D

Computer: Desktop
Distro: Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit
Desktop Environment: KDE Plasma 4.8.3
Plasma Theme: Ember (from KDE-Look)
Window Theme: Oxygen Transparent (from KDE-Look)
Color Scheme: Obsidian Purple (modified from Obsidian Coast)
KDE Splash: custom-made "Ubuntu Abstract"
Left Wallpaper: custom-made Legend of Zelda "Link and Saria"
Right Wallpaper: one of many forest wallpapers found on the 'net
Icons: Oxygen Colors v5.2 (from KDE-Look... Violet Glass color)
Special Features: Icon-only Taskbar ; Dual displays ; "News Feeds" Activity with numerous News Feeds widgets and Yet Another Weather Plasmoid

Love the black and green theme. And your Emerald theme looks kinda like my Oxygen Transparent theme in KDE, only with Win7-like buttons. Love the Aero look :D

Hi 404, I see you have Diablo3 installed and play via wine right? How is the performance and what steps did you follow to get it working?

Well I am currently able to play it with all the bells and whistles on and the FPS are more than enough :)

I took all the guess work and suffering out of wine by using Crossover (I highly recommend it!)

Last off-topic... pity I can't get it to work properly under Ubuntu yet :/ (also, this is Battlecry 3 which isn't nearly as awesome to me as 2 even though they are similar :( )

Mine hasn't changed since April 2010 when I installed 10.04 LTS; therefore, without "Unity". "Unity", as referenced in the thread title.

I guess no one would appreciate my old outdated screenshot from the currently supported 10.04 LTS version of Ubuntu.

Also wanted to share this with you, it's a fix I'm using to help correct Firefox with dark GTK themes.

This gives you a nice black text cursor, & black on crisp white in the text entry input areas.

#### Firefox text fix goes inside the <theme name>/gtk-2.0/gtkrc (or an app fix in the gtk-2.0/styles) This should work with all problematic dark themes in Firefox #########

style "ff" {
text[NORMAL] = "#000000"
base[NORMAL] = "#FFFFFF"
}
class "GtkInvisible" style "ff"
widget "GtkInvisible" style "ff"

style "custom" {
GtkWidget::cursor-color = "#000000"
GtkWidget::secondary-cursor-color = "#FF0000"
}
widget_class "*" style "custom"

###### End of Firefox fix ##########

I don't know what the secondary cursor is, but you'll have a red one with these codes, naturally you can change them to whatever works.

I see a lot of good looking desktops this month. :)

I apologize up front if I drifted off topic but if this works as well for others as it does for me I'd like to make sure it spreads throughout the community. If you did the userChrome.css fix you may need to remove or disable it for this to work properly.

* This may also be a global fix if it's inserted in the ~/.gtkrc file but I haven't tested that extensively yet.

The wallpaper is another one I made myself, another wallpaper of Kuroneko from Ore no Imouto. This time, I made a 3-way split image, and made them black & white with a violet photo filter. However, only the eyes are in color... just for effect :D It certainly fits my desktop's more gothic theme better than the forest-themed wallpapers did. Don't ask me where I got the 2 images that I used for the wallpaper, 'cause I don't remember. All I did was Google "Ore no Imouto Kuroneko wallpaper" and set the size to 1920x1200, and eventually I found a few, or at least a website that had them.

I have 3 versions of this image: the grayscale version shown, a full color version, and a partial color version (center frame in color)... all 3 in 1080p and 1920x1200 resolutions.

Please, could you give me the wallpaper from the second shot? It's exactly what i'm looking for!

EDIT: Never mind, found it by accident on google: http://ubuntu-art.org/CONTENT/content-files/123065-Ubuntu_10.04_Abst_01_1440x900.jpg

Love the Lake Isles wallpaper!

Yep, that's my favorite in the Lion collection. Can't make myself switch to another.

For others who use Mac Lion, too: Has anyone else wondered whether Lion designers have taken a few tips from Ubuntu? There's more than one "earthy" toned wallpaper in there.

Before Lion, I thought Mac wallpapers were bit focused on the bright sky blues. But this one and other defaults in that OS make me feel like putting another log on the fire, lighting another pipe, and pouring another peaty scotch. Just, restful.

I've just learned how to install themes so mine isn't all that impressive but here it is!

Ubuntu 12.04
GNOME Classic

Window Theme: Hope-DT (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Hope+gtk3?content=141491)
GTK+ Theme: Adwaita (default)
Icon Theme: AwOken (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/AwOken?content=126344)
Wallpaper: Rurouni Kenshin from DesktopNexus.org

I'm still looking around for a theme that has a dark toolbar and instead of the blue highlighting of Adwaita, an orange highlight (it's my favorite color), but I I'm in love with the Adwaita-style panel. I would've used Hope-DT for the GTK+ theme, but the fonts disappear when I choose it. I dunno why. :( Still learning!

Window Theme: Mac OS Lion (I replaced the max, min, close buttons with ones from a Malys theme).

Thanks viperdvman.

Yes, the persistent (as in not fading in on mouseover) global menu is alive and well in Classic. You can check to see if you've already got it installed by super-alt-right-clicking on the panel, then clicking "Add to panel." It would be in your list as "Indicator Applet AppMenu."

If you don't see it in that list, you can get it through ppa:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jconti/gnome3
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install indicator-applet-appmenu

Other indicators are also at that ppa, including indicator-applet-complete, which is a set of the most common ones, installed at one time.

Thanks hictio for showing interest in this.

It's in the repos. Just

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jconti/gnome3
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install indicator-applet-appmenu

Super-alt-right-click on your panel, then click "Add applet". Add to the panel from the list.

Works with no bugs whatsoever here, and for all apps, not only GTK+.

BTW, it won't work in the Shell and it won't work on Unity. Classic is the only GNOME flavor with the persistent global menu at this point. XFCE has it, but not as elegant as this one.

This is my current new install of 12.04 on my Desktop PC. I found this wallpaper and finding it extremeley suitable for a Conky on the right, for which i have yet to create the script for...
Using Gnome 3 shell 3.4
Avant Window Navigator
Prophet 2 as the shell theme --> |
Zukitwo as the GTK+theme,,,---> | The prophet theme is the white top panel, while the other two blend in perfectly for a "white" window theme.
Zukini as the Window theme ---> |

Same Ubuntu, only running the default desktop environment. I'm mostly playing around with Unity at the moment. The wallpaper on the left monitor still looks a bit squished since there is no scale & crop option in Unity for wallpapers. But I got a really nice gothic looking theme going, including coloring the ACYL icons to fit the wallpaper. Yes, I made the wallpaper myself :) With the exception of Kuroneko's eyes in the center frame, the rest is grayscale with a violet photo filter.

Computer: Desktop
Distro: Ubuntu 12.04
Desktop Environment: Unity
GTK Theme: Adwaita-X-dark (from ppa:webupd8team/themes)
Window Theme: Black-Out-GTK (from GNOME-Look.org)
Wallpaper: custom-made Ore no Imouto "Kuroneko 3-frame"

the only way I got them to work was customizing them in an older distro then copying them over. you can't modify them in 12.04 or later.

I posted in your support thread last night and explained the problem best as I can. The dependencies you're missing are Python packages, but I'm not quite sure which ones. Make sure you have python-glade2 and python-gtk and, I think, Python 2.7 installed, then see which dependencies it still asks for. I had to do the same thing to run the ACYL icon editor under 11.10, and it's still working under 12.04.

You can use Synaptic Package Manager to browse for the packages, or just the Ubuntu Software Center (but if you use the latter, be sure to click the link at the lower right of the screen in the search to "Show Technical Items."

Not sure why you'd be having dependency issues. I'm currently running Ubuntu 12.04 (as shown in my previous post). But I didn't obtain ACYL through GNOME-Look. I was curious and decided to google it and came upon this link:

http://www.upubuntu.com/2011/12/how-to-install-and-enable-acyl-icon.html

Sure it's for Ubuntu 11.10, but it works in 12.04 just fine if that's what you're running. It also tells you how to bring up the gui to change the colors, a few default icons, etc.

-------

Edit: After reading about the python dependencies... I had already installed those when I installed Aw0ken and kAw0ken icon themes in my Ubuntu. :)

Good luck with ACYL, and let us know.

Been playing with Trisquel Brigantia this week. Damn good distro... Just can't decide if I should find a way to install real Flash or just keep dealing with Gnash, lol.

Trisquel GTK, Unity window borders, Gion Icons, Docky... Wallpaper from random Google Image search under 'Triskele'.

Hey, I couldn't stay away from Unity either (look at my last screenshot post... dual-display Unity). Although KDE is now my primary DE, I still go back to Unity now and then when I'm in the mood. Note: I haven't tried my Mac OS X style interface in either GNOME Classic nor GNOME Shell... yet. Maybe when I'm in the mood to tinker around, I will :)

Maybe this might help:

Q: Conky won't stop flickering

A: Conky is designed to draw to the root desktop window. However, there are several other applications which like drawing to the root desktop window. Because of this, Conky has two options available to get around this problem:

You can try enabling double-buffer. Conky's double-buffer option uses the X double-buffer extension to provide a flicker-free Conky. This can be done by running Conky with the '-b' parameter, or adding this to your conkyrc:

double_buffer yes

like with a lot of good things it seems to be having no real development being done on it, an alternative is xbar (part of the bespin kde style/suite)

I've seen the XBar before, and it was part of Kubuntu up to Natty, as Oneric and Precise don't have it in the repos.

I have installed it before right after I installed Kubuntu Precise, and all the menu shows is "Plasma Customizable menu, see http://CloudCity.SF.net/xbar.html"

And with the said configuration file non-existant, I decided that it was a rubbish plasmoid and not use it

So if I ever want to use a global menu in KDE, I'll just use the regular plasma-menubar

I attached my boot theme, it looks very good when you switch-out the standard lightdm unity-greeter login background out for the one used in the theme, this makes the transition very smooth (the name is kinda a pun).
This is how you install it (assuming it's saved as smooth_plymouth_theme.tar.gz in your homedir) (note: that's two dashes in front of --install on the second line):

sudo tar xzf smooth_plymouth_theme.tar.gz -C /lib/plymouth/themes/
sudo update-alternatives --install /lib/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth default.plymouth /lib/plymouth/themes/smooth/smooth.plymouth 100

Now use (again, 2 dashes in --config):

sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth
sudo update-initramfs -u
sudo update-grub

Have fun.

LXDE is an untapped resource, IMO. Doesn't seem like a lot of ppl are running it, which makes it even more appealing, for me. :)

It's mad fast, on a USB thumb drive. Plus, it looks good regardless of display size. Everything is incredibly crisp and clean.

When up run it on top of Ubuntu 12.10, all the latest apps work, too -- GiMP 2.8.0, for instance.

Love that second wallpaper. Where'd you get it?

Relatively stock KDE4, with most of this coming from KDE-Artwork. You can get these straight from the control panels iirc.

Oxygen widget and window themes (blue glow disabled) with Dark Default colorscheme
KFaenza icon set(Faenza with Oxygen colors, plus icons specific to KDE)
Androbit Plasma theme
I snagged the wallpaper with "Get New Wallpapers..." but it's listed as "151125-DSC_0067-2-2560", real helpful

Top bar has the Window Menubar widget, the left "dock" uses the Icon-Only Taskbar widget

I like that Unity-style setup you have for your KDE :) It looks really nice.
