Ubuntu Linux acts erratically when not plugged into a mains power source. Random glitches and crashes of various running programs. It can't be the hardware as this does not happen in Windows 7. If I'm plugged in however, all is perfect.

I have an Acer Aspire 5733.

Did this just recently started to happen (assuming you had linux on long time) or has it occurred since installation (recent install) ?

Also after the glitching occurs check your /var/log directory to look at the log file and see what is happening.

It has occurred since putting 12.04 on. 11:10 was fine, so is various other distros, except Linux Mint 13 which does this also. Windows 7 is fine. I'm currently in Windows now, but when I boot in to Ubuntu. I'll have a look at that log file.

Cheers, meanwhile any other thoughts?

might be that 12.04 use more power & this battery is not strong enough (by the way im not sure  )
