View Full Version : [SOLVED] HP dv9000/Ubuntu 12.04 catastrophic screen failure

Hello again,

Just installed ubuntu 12.04 on a hp dv9000, and the screen is whack. The default purple background shows for a bit, then "falls" down to the bottom in a thin multi-colored line at the bottom. I have mouse movement the whole time, but on a black screen. It gave a message you need restricted drivers, I'm assuming it wants the new nvidia drivers (getting them fixed a much smaller issue with 10.04 on the same machine, see thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1989670 ).

I see three courses of action, would any work?

1. I found a script that would install the latest drivers and a way to make them auto-execute on startup, would it be possible to insert them into the proper place with 10.04 booted (my machine is dual boot both versions until I can iron out all the kinks)?

2. As above, but if I can't edit them in from 10.04 could I create a script that would auto-run from a usb left in during boot?

3. If neither of the above work could I transfer the drivers from 10.04's partition to 12.04's?

As I've posted before, I'm a total noob, so I'd appreciate any assist given.

More info:

I managed to log into 2D mode and install the drivers. Will reboot now, and check results. Will mark as solved if it is so.

All is well! marking as solved now, and clean-installing 12.04 in place of 10.04!
