How To Get On Kazaa, Ares, Gift and Gnutella in one program

Hi folks, I originally started this thread in 2006. Sadly the method shown below wont work anymore. As far as I know the Apollon and Gift projects have been discontinued. I recommend that you try Frostwire instead or use more legit ways of getting free music. There's plenty of great unsigned artists out there just waiting to be discovered and many of them have free music. Don't limit yourself to the music the greedy industry has forced on us. Videos and apps can be found too :-)

I'm using apollon with Ares, Gift, Kazzaa(Fasttrack) and Gnutella all at the same time. It takes a bit of configuration but I think it's worth it. Here's how I do it:


1. In the terminal type:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

2. Add the following to the bottom of the document in gedit:

deb http://apt.cerkinfo.be/ unstable main contrib
deb-src http://apt.cerkinfo.be/ unstable main contrib

3. Save the file

4. In the terminal type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gift libares-gift libfasttrack-gift apollon

5. The following instructions must be carried out by each individual user. In the termnial type:

gift-setup


You'll get asked a bunch of questions:

***THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IN THIS BIT IS TO MAKE SURE YOU TYPE IN THE FOUR NETWORKS WHEN IT ASKS YOU WHICH PLUGINS TO USE****


Ares:Gnutella:FastTrack:OpenFT

Remember that it's case sensitive you you have to have your capital letters in the right places.

In this setup prgram you might also want to change the folder your completed downloads go into. By default the files go into a hidden folder which is not to everyone's taste. So make sure you change that when you're asked where you wanted completed files to go.


After that you can just keep hitting return and then run apollon from the terminal by typing:

apollon

(if apollon fails to connect the first time close it, type giftd in the terminal and try opening it again. You will only ever have to do that once)

Yes, it may take a few minutes to set up but in the long run it's definitely worth it because you have access to all the major filesharing networks and a pretty decent gui.

A note about ares: For some reason it doesn't give me the right information about ares. It says there are only 2 people connected to the ares network. That doesn't mean you are not connected properly to ares. Ares files will still come up when you do a search. I think it's just that the counter doesn't work and that's not a serious problem.

I get the same issues. sometimes some of networks take quite a while to connect. But everything works well with patience.

when starting giftd i get the following error:

at the same time i installed kceasy (the windows-equivalent to apollon) on an other machine with the same settings, and it's working fine.

I'm run the config several times, can't find what's wrong.
Question: did people choose Y or N on the first question about preserving your defaults settings or something? I chose N, maybe this was the problem.
edit: oh, when you choose no it just skips everything. nevermind. anybody have any ideas on the config file, or could they just post hteres?

Ok, I found the problem [most likely] for those of us with the error message at the beginning. The first question of the gift-setup, you have to CHANGE from default of 0 to make it 1 or some number. This makes me kinda pissed, because they say, "we put this in here just to make sure you read this."
When they say, "this value must be non-zero blah blah" but really this is just a completely unnecessary config question that wastes are time and makes things "just NOT work". arg, that's annoying, whose idea was that anyway? plus, whose idea is a fricken 35 questions command line config with 3000 words?! All for all the others (except the networks to connect to as mentioned in the howto) the default works. But it would be nice to config all this graphically anyway...

Edit: anybody know which package is needed to get the preview/internal player working in Apollon? it says the "kde multimedia-video" package is needed. Searching the packages, couldn't find what they're talking about...

I tried this once and couldn't get it working. Went back later on when I'd gotten some sleep and attempted it again. Works fine on Kubuntu 6.06 Dapper LTS. Yes, even I got issues with the damn thing connecting to the Ares network (slow connecting and only showing 2 connected) but all and all an excellent How-To. This means my desktop can now do P2P without Java whatsoever:-o Limewire Pro and Frostwire would freeze up my desktop system randomly with any form of Java (open source or Sun):-( Now if I could just get the system to not lockup while playing Pysol solitaire I'd be very happy indeed.

giftd and it just sat there doing nothing ( i waited about 10 mins). then I tried

I tried restarting with the same error. I don't know how to manually configure the port so that nothing else is using it. I really just want to uninstall the whole thing.

Everything installed fine for me. When I open Apollon, it connects right away, but it only shows Ares and FastTrack in the Info screen. Where is Gnutella and OpenFT? When I go to the options and look at the Plug-ins, all four of them are there. But they are not displayed in the Info screen.

I thought maybe I was still connected to all 4 networks, and it was a problem with Apollon not displaying the other two networks. But when I run a search, I only get results for Ares and FastTrack. What is going on here? Anyone else encounter this?

For anyone having troubles connecting to certain networks, don't forget to forward your ports if they are blocked. I could only connect to the Gnutella network before opening these up. Below is a list of the default ports for the different networks as setup by the gift-setup...

Is anyone else having the following probelm with Apollon?

When I open the program, it takes the partition that it downloads to (I use this partition particularly for downloads, but with other programs as well) and it locks it so suddenly I can't write to it. Additionally, the program Pauses ALL the downloads and refuses to let me Resume them. I have to close Apollon, umount and re-mount my partition to gain write access back. PLUS, to make it weirder, it will radnomly stop doing that and work fine for a while, then suddenly go back to pausing and locking my partition. I can't see any pattern.

make sure you have all of the universe and other such repositories enabled in your sources.list

after you do:

sudo apt-get install gift apollon

it *Should* install all gift dependancies without a fuss, I tried it on a fresh system and it worked fine. *Then* I downloaded the other two DEB files for ares and fasttrack:

Oddly after the edgy upgrade and a fresh install I can't seem to connect to anything with apollon. My ports are open (even tested this from my work) and there isn't any firewall running at the time. Very weird. Ares connects for 5 seconds sometimes then goes back to connecting. :/

Only OpenFT is working for me too. Can't make it connect anything eventhough I've forwarded ports. And really forwarding ports shouldn't be necessary right? Only when someone else tries to connect to you.

Not sure if this thread is dead, but I'll join the other voices of 2007 by saying that I can't connect to anything but OpenFT (I'm on Dapper).

I've taken the advice of people on this thread and been patient for a good old while to connect. Like, days. Still no luck. I've Googled till my fingers hurt and found almost nothing about any tricks to try ("ubuntu ares" hardly turns up anything, surprisingly -- the people posting here can't be the only Ubuntu users using the Ares network?).

Weirder still, "grep -i ares .giFT/giftd.log" gets me *only* the following (even though giftd.log is 3396 lines long!):

The port seems to be forwarding from my router just fine, although I'm not 100% sure I'm checking it right (does anybody know a surefire way to do this?).

The only thing I could deduce from this output is that my node file might be outdated. This looks promising because nearly all of the values in the last_seen columns of ~/.giFT/Ares/nodes and /usr/share/giFT/Ares/nodes are timestamps from Febuary 2006. There's just one that's different, in ~/.giFT/Ares/nodes, which has a timestamp from yesterday (?!).

Soo... does anybody know if I'm on the right track here? Does anybody know where to get up-to-date node files? Google shows me this suspicious and very recent CVS checkin (http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=31648246&forum_id=8084), but that's it.

I'll throw my 2 cents in here too, I too can only connect to OpenFT with Edgy. On Dapper, all worked fine. I have all the correct ports open, and am about to put the machine on a DMZ to see if that will help.

I feel so stupid at the moment. I tried out Ubuntu a couple of days ago and managed to get apollon connected to the ares network. Problem was when I decided that I liked Ubuntu and was going to ditch windows when I formatted my drive I figured I would just get back online and search the solution again.

:( I'm having difficulty finding the solution again. However (yes there is good news coming) the issue with ares was that the node list was very out of date and I needed to download a updated version of the node list and replace it.

The file you need to replace is called nodes and resides in the /home/username/.gift/ares/

I hope that by posting this that if other people start looking for this updated nodes file we will all resolve this issue quicker.

Rad. Interestingly, Ares did eventually connect for me with the old nodes file, but it took about a week. I did replace it with the new nodes file just in case though (not sure if it really matters at this point, but hey).

Just to add my two cents.... I followed the instructions as originally posted, and the only network that connected for me was FastTrack. After a few hours, I tried the new ares node list file, and am now waiting for any of the four to connect (its been 10 min. so far...)

The say way that the problem regarding Ares was found, is there a log file that we can check for information about openFT, FastTrack, and GNUtella?

Open up ~/.giFT/Gnutella/gwebcaches in a text editor and paste any url with a score of 100 from the list at http://gcachescan.jonatkins.com/ into the end of the file. (To understand what this means, look at http://wiki.shareaza.com/static/G2ConnectingGuide.) Save the file, restart the giftd daemon, and you should be good to go.

I figured this out after looking at the output of cat .giFT/giftd.log|grep Gnutella and noticing this sort of thing repeated every ten seconds:

If you're still having trouble with the Ares plugin, you might want to try stopping the daemon (or disconnecting the Ares plugin), then replacing the nodes file, and then restarting the daemon/plugin, *in that order*.

When I was mucking around with Gnutella, I noticed that somehow my Ares nodes file had been cleared (nothing there but the header row) and that if I restored it and then killed the daemon, it would clear it again. Don't know why, but it seems like the plugin might be a bit finicky about the daemon being restarted. Might be worth a try if it's still not working.

Like I say though, I am getting way better results frum Gnutella, so maybe the Ares plugin or network just isn't quite up to snuff?...

I didn't do anything other than what the howto directed to do. FastTrack always connects for me, but usually after its open about a few hours. The only room I see for differences is how we all decided to fill out our configuration files. My FastTrack.conf is attached.

Like I said, its strange, cause openFT def doesn't work for me, nor Ares (gnutella does now thanks to the previous 4 posts or so :D ).

Do you have encryption turned on for FastTrack somewhere? I'd check my .conf files b/c:

The fasttrack protocol is encrypted (It is according to wikipedia) and some people decided to reverse engineer it. They managed to crack the encryption between clients and nodes but not between nodes, this much is certain.

Now maybe what the fasttrack plugin have to do is through bits and pieces it gets figure out something. And this is why it takes so much time. But when you've done it you wont have to do it again. Or maybe you do have to do it everytime you restart I don't know, i'll just leave it running for a while and see what will happen.

Maybe OpenFT isn't working because you haven't forwarded a port?

EDIT: Just tried, kazaa lite resurrection doesn't work either :/

Yay got everything working! Got it done by geting new nodes and stuff, will explain more later, I got to study right now.

So how did I do? Well the nodes list that come with giFT is really outdated, probably none of them was working and that is why it didn't work. I then installed kazaa lite resurrection in XP in vmware but I had the same problem. After some searching came across snode. (http://snode.blogspot.com/) A application that updates your kazaa nodes list. Now it worked! Next problem was that it is somehow encrypted och something, it's not plain IPs. With kazaa a application called KaZuperNodes which you can use to get ip's of the nodes. With this I extracted it to a list and changed it alittle bit to be compatible with gift. I replaced nodes with this list and bam, within five minutes I was able to access 1.61 million GB kazaa material :)

Replace ~/.giFT/FastTrack/nodes with this and hopefully everything will be fine. Also I had to disable the NAT forwarding setting in fasttrack config even though I'm behind a router. It doesn't work, maybe it is the way I forward (dnat?) I don't know.

To get gnutella working I did
wget http://apollon.sf.net/gnutella/nodes -O ~/.giFT/Gnutella/nodes
This will replace Gnutella nodes with something newer. I also followed the instructions earlier as well as emptying ~/.giFT/Gnutella/bad_gwebcaches as it denyed all webcaches I had.

So how did I do? Well the nodes list that come with giFT is really outdated, probably none of them was working and that is why it didn't work. I then installed kazaa lite resurrection in XP in vmware but I had the same problem. After some searching came across snode. (http://snode.blogspot.com/) A application that updates your kazaa nodes list. Now it worked! Next problem was that it is somehow encrypted och something, it's not plain IPs. With kazaa a application called KaZuperNodes which you can use to get ip's of the nodes. With this I extracted it to a list and changed it alittle bit to be compatible with gift. I replaced nodes with this list and bam, within five minutes I was able to access 1.61 million GB kazaa material :)

Just installed Apollon by following these directions, updated the Node files for Fasttrack and Ares, and still no go. Even did the giftd then restarted, no go.

I recently got a DLINK DGL 4300 and opened the following ports, under Advanced/Special Applications and Advanced/Gaming:

Still nothing connects, even let it sit for 15 minutes. nothing.

Any ideas what I need to do to get these to connect?

I'm also having problems with giFT.

I've been using giFT for along time, first discovered back in my windows days. And was one of the many reasons I moved over.

Never had any problems, but now I've justed upgraded to Feisty and I can not seem to get it to connect. It did manage to connect to OpenFT for a second.

Is there something happening here guys?

I also tryed updated the nodes file for OpenFT, FastTrack, and Ares from here (http://update.kceasy.com/update/). But it did not work. I remember back when I used KCeasy in windows, there was an option to update the nodes/banlist. Was this just from http://update.kceasy.com/update/ as well?

If anyone was wondering, you can get an updated copy of the banlist for FastTrack from here (http://www2.openmedia.info:8080/p23.html): http://www.openmedia.info/downloads/guarding.p2p.zip

You have to unzip it, and rename it. After I had done that, I stopped getting lots of fakes in my search. It's meant to be updated every now and again.

So I was thinking maybe it's about time there was a script, that would go out and update these files for us. I might try start on one, however I need a good source to get the information from.

For Gnutella http://gcachescan.jonatkins.com/ looks like a winner, but I'm not sure how i could extract the information from the webpage in a script. I'm sure there is a command available.

So to conclude, at the moment I'm only capable to make a script to update the banlist for FastTrack. For the other networks I need some help.

Couldn't figure out which ports to open coz during the setup, there were a few mentioned. I took note of the http, Gnutella and TCP but couldn't figure out how to open them using firestarter. Even when i turned it off completely, could only connect to Ares and not getting any traffic whatsoever. Even my searches are not returning anything, even for popular content. If only frostwire didn't use up all my resources when its running!

I got both Frostwire and Apollon working today. Frostwire is way less buddy than Apollon and has a built-in media player. Apollon is working, but the hashing is very slow and buggy, e.g.: once the hashing is done, the program still says I'm sharing 0 files and 0MB. Almost all search results in Apollon are from the Gnutella network, which is the same Frostwire uses. There's no big disadvantage in using only the Gnutella network, IMO. Even when you're connected to all 4 networks, you'll get a weird status, e.g. 2 users connected on the Ares network.

Frostwire pro's: built-in media player, fast downloads, fast connecting to the Gnutella network.
Frostwire con's: only 1 supported network (Gnutella), virusses and SPAM in search results.

Apollon pro's: 4 supported networks, fast downloads.
Apollon con's: slow connecting to networks, buggy interface, virusses and SPAM in search results.

i really prefer it to frostwire, but it is a pain to set up (configuring gift is a pain. speaking of which, gift hasn't been worked on it seems since 2005 either!)

i've even set it up twice before, but just built a new computer and am trying to set it up again and still can't figure out why it's not connecting! i remember it took me a long time before as well... stupidstupid

My recommendation is that people use frostwire instead: http://www.frostwire.com/

Personally I would prefer top see Apollon back and someone making it easier to install.

Ok... After a bit of research. Neither the Appollon of the gIFT projects have posted any news for years. Apollon is just an interface for gIFT and cannot work if giFT is obsolete. The networks gift used to connect to have moved on and work differently now.

How to get it working again?
There is one project related to gift that is still active. KCEasy is a windows program that is also a frontend to gIFT. The guy behind that seems to have been able to get it working. If someone can find out how we did that maybe someone could apply the same technique to apollon.

I would like to suggest that SOMEBODY launched a website dedicated to linux updated information. As a recent windows-emigrate, I believe the biggest issue in linux distros is to find working repositories (as they get more and more descentralized every day) and updated info on file-sharing networks.

You seek info, read all the step-by-step tips, and keep having trouble and more, till one day you'll find the dream was all gone. So frustrating. It costed me a lot of work to read through the 3 years of conversation in this thread (Ok, next time, I'll check the most recent posts).

I configured all this stuff. When it came to how many Supernodes I wanted to connect to, I chose 17 or 27 (not sure anymore) because the setup told me not to "overdo" it. Seems like I exceeded the limit.

When I start Apollon, the Info tells me:


Connection error
The giFT daemon, which is responsible for connecting to the various networks, appears to be down and I don't seem to able to start it.
Probably your giFT installation is corrupted. Try starting giFT manually by typing "giftd" on the command line. If this gives errors, there's likely some internal error in giFT or in your giFT configuration. Refer to the giFT homepage at http://giftproject.org for help.

But I do not want to re-run all this setup-procedure again, so can anyone tell me how to to change this value? The giftd.conf file in ~/.giFT does not seem to contain this setting.

I updated the nodes file with the updated one, and yet it still has not connected to the Ares network, so the thing I have to do is just wait?
