What are your favorite Linux Distros of 2012?

Ubuntu and Mint are my favorite all around. (Same thing really. Mint = 95% Ubuntu +non-free drivers, more or less. Yes, I'm aware there are other differences. We're talking overall practicality.) (I'm torn between Ubuntu and Xubuntu. I like XFCE best overall, but there are some pretty cool features in Gnome/Nautilus that I like. Of course, you CAN run XFCE with nautilus and some Gnome libs, if you don't mind that sort of thing.)

For webservers, I like using OpenSuSE, but Apache2 is just as stable and easy on pretty much any good distro. Yast2 is nice.

I WANT to like Fedora, but it's missing remastersys, which I like having on desktop environments. Same with Slack/Salix - I want to like it, but Ubuntu seems more well-rounded (although once I learned it, I DO like the yum package manager as well as I do apt.)

Mandriva's pretty slick, if you can get the live-boot to actually load, and Slax is a portable USB of slackware that's really well put together. Some guys in Russia put together ROSA (ROCA) which is a Mandriva variant, and it's REALLY nice. KDE front end.

Debian has recently been a pain in my tail. Again, I WANT to like it, but I've had trouble getting certain packages to play nice with other ones. If I try to REALLY load up the system, I invariably get something that clashes with something else. Comparing it to Ubuntu, I'd use Ubuntu. It's kind of like dealing with your best friend's well-meaning but profoundly stupid older brother. It's got some rough edges (of course, I've been using Testing/Sid. The stable version's a lot more sane.)

Not a big fan of BSD distros. Mostly because I can't ever get them to load up properly on anything.

Oh! And honorable mention and big kudos to Linux Mint's Debian edition, which kinda fixes a lot of the problems I mentioned earlier in raw Debian.

Disclaimer: the above is strictly my own opinion, and is completely worthless to anyone, human or otherwise. ; )

I"m locked on ubuntu and mint. Mint worked around a few bugs that are still in ubuntu but both work great! :)

Linux Mint Debian Edition has worked wonders on my netbook. The various incarnations of Puppy Linux are also great. Crunchbang and Archbang are nice if you like openbox.

Otherwise I mostly work within the various ubuntu-based distros that everyone else digs.

Kubuntu 12.04
Although I like Unity it makes my gpu behaves like a oven. With Kubuntu the gpu and everything else are running cooler. Besides that, I loved how customizable kde is.

I have loved Ubuntu at one time but it has gone in the worng direction. I have for years now taken old computers and installed Ubuntu on them and given them away with my personal support behind them. The new user interface "unity" is so bad that most of 30+ computer users I got onto Ubuntu have now left back to Microsoft my sworn enemy. I have hung in as long as I could thinking Unity was just going to be a bad phase. but it is now a huge thorn for me. now i have to look for a new version of linux. any Ideas or recomendations.

You should start a new thread with this topic.

I would vote for Xubuntu. XFCE 4.8 and 4.10 behave enough like Gnome2 that your users should feel at home.

I would also look at Mint with the Mate or Cinammon Desktop.

Hope you can find a distro that suits your users.

Well, you could go up the Debian chain, go for other *Buntu's or head over to the slackware and redhat chain, I personally like Fedora, Crunchbang is very stable, although it tries to persuade you to think otherwise. Hope you find a fit distro!

New Ubuntu user here with 12.4. I started eons ago with Slackware on floppies and moved to Mandrake, then Mandrivia. I tried early Ubuntu and didn't like it. Started using PCLinuxOS in 2007 and have been on it since (KDE). I like PCLOS as dual boot on my desktop and will stay with it.
But my pet eeePC 900 has been a problem child. I have killed WinXP 3 times on it and faced with yet another install + service pack + 114 (count 'em) updates + application installations was not doing it for me. I did run Zen Mini (light Gnome PCLOS) well in the eee, but could never get my 3g mobile broadband USB modem to work. Finally decided to try Ubuntu again. Clean install, a few updates in two reboot cycles. Added one application (Skype) and I am done. Everything just works out of the box including the modem. Much faster than Windows.
So my favs are Ubuntu, PCLOS, and Zen Mini.

Yeah, I tried Mint 13, and thought it was pretty neat, but I also really like Ubuntu 12.04. For now, I am going to stay on 12.04, but I loved the applications menu on Mint, the design with Cinnamon was pretty awesome, I must say. What features do you like about each? And what do you like better between the both of them?

That's basically Ubuntu without all the effects and unity, etc, correct? Correct me if I am wrong, because I am asking, not stating lol. Might have to try that though, that would be the OS for just SPEED right? If so, probably good for my laptop in that case.

Right now, my favorites are Ubuntu 12.04, Arch Linux, and Siduction 12.1. I also like Sabayon, but it is a strange sort of a beast.

For Servers: Oracle Enterprise Linux 6.x, Redhat Entrerprise Linux 6.x, and CentOS 6.x are my favorite picks. All three have solid design, with excellent community and commercial support.
For Desktops/Laptops: I prefer Fedora 16, Ubuntu 12.04LTS, and PCLinuxOS 2012.02.
All three are on the lead edge of design and features and have a solid community around them.

After a long consideration, finally made the switch to Xubuntu with 12.04 (previously used Unity for a couple of weeks and gnome 3 for the last 4-5 months). With some customization, including nautilus and a couple of other things, now it is definitely the best distro I've used.

My Tops -
Xubuntu 12.04
CrunchBang... Finally tried Statler (eagerly awaiting Waldorf release)
Racy 5.3
Bodhi
Solus

Other -
Didn't like the new Fedora, Trisquel was interesting, uninterested in Mint this time around, waiting for new Peppermint, and Debian stable made me realize how much I DON'T miss old Gnome.

That about covers me and Linux so far this year.
