10.04.4 live CD will not work

Hello.

This CD works fully in one machine (dating from 2005)
but not in another (dating from 2002).
In live mode:
F1 -F6 are ok but F7 only comes up with a black X screen and a large X for a mouse pointer.
The install:
Seems to go fine but then on rebooting the machine Ubuntu does not do anything at all whatsoever.

Searching the forum produces no results;
anyone have any ideas about this please?

If we are dealing with a computer from 2002, I would recommend Lubuntu 12.04.

Also more ram could help, but that depends on the graphics card. What are your specs?

I followed your upgrade link and so on.. and found a possible solution:

nomodeset

to put into the live CD boot prompt line.
That did get the live CD going but -

on the 1280x1024 screen the windows went black if opened up to more than [what I judged to be] 1024x760.

also under Administration>Appearance
I had to switch to the plain regular display option at the top of the 3 display options.
I am selecting this [long term support] release because it's for work and like to keep installs to a minimum.

However, although that's positive, I still do not have any ideas as to how any of that can be used to get an install working.

There is not much long time support left in 10.04. I still recommend Lubuntu 12.04.

Does the computer have an Nvidia Geforce 2 screen card? Please post the output from lshw in CODE tags.

I used to have a computer more or less like this one (with Geforce, that is), and I only managed to get a moderate screen resolution.
